Choosing the material and the finish

Galvanised steel with an epoxy or powder coated finish covers the majority of inland installations and remains the rational choice on cost. Stainless steel 316L becomes necessary in saline atmospheres, in permanently humid environments and wherever the appearance has to stay intact over many years, because its molybdenum content resists chloride corrosion that 304 grade does not.

Standards and public procurement

Freely accessible outdoor fitness equipment falls under EN 16630, which defines safety requirements, protection zones around each station and the maintenance plan the operator has to run. Where a project also declares play use, EN 1176 applies to the equipment and EN 1177 to the surfacing. ASTM F3101 certification is available as an option on part of the range for projects that call for it. Installation and maintenance

Machines are anchored in concrete footings or on ground plates depending on the model and the sub base. How many stations should be installed?

The figure comes from the available area and the expected number of simultaneous users, not from a fixed ratio. Each station carries a safety zone that has to be added to its own footprint, so a compact site with six well chosen stations often works better than a crowded site with twelve. We size this on the layout drawing before quoting.

Does an outdoor gym need special surfacing?

Body weight resistance stations at ground level can be installed on grass or on a stabilised surface. As soon as there is a raised element with a fall height, impact absorbing surfacing is required, and outdoor rated rubber tiles or bonded rubber are the usual answers. Drainage of the sub base determines how long any outdoor surface lasts.

Is the equipment resistant to vandalism?

The range uses closed profiles, concealed or tamper resistant fixings and no exposed cables, which removes the most common targets. Stainless steel 316L has a further advantage in exposed locations because paint cannot be scratched off and graffiti can be cleaned without refinishing.
