Fitness equipment for hotels and resorts

Fitness equipment for hotels and resorts

A hotel gym is now an expected facility rather than a bonus, and guests judge it in the first ten seconds. Light In Fitness specifies, supplies and installs fitness areas for city hotels, four and five star properties, tourism residences and resorts, working around the constraints that make hospitality different: limited floor area, noise transmission towards guest rooms, interior design requirements and unsupervised use. We manufacture and distribute more than 2,000 references from our base in Tours, France, and quote every project within 24 working hours.

Why a fitness area pays for itself in hospitality

Business and leisure travellers increasingly filter properties by the presence of a gym. On booking platforms the facility is a visible ranking and filtering criterion, it supports the room rate, and it reduces the number of guests who leave the property to train. For three, four and five star hotels the fitness room has become part of the expected standard, in the same way as air conditioning or Wi-Fi.

The commercial return depends on execution. A room with three tired consumer treadmills damages perceived value. A compact, quiet, well finished space with four or five reliable machines does the opposite, and costs less to run over ten years.

The three constraints specific to hotel gyms

Noise and vibration

Hotel fitness rooms are usually next to bedrooms, corridors or public areas. Equipment selection has to be acoustic first: treadmills with advanced deck cushioning, magnetic resistance indoor cycling bikes and rowers rather than fan or friction units, and a floor build that isolates impact. Where the room sits above or beside bedrooms, the rubber gym flooring tile thickness and the underlay must be validated before installation, not after the first complaint.

Compact footprint and design

Most hotel gyms occupy 20 to 60 m². Every square metre is revenue space that has been given up, so machine footprint and visual quality matter as much as biomechanics. We favour compact selectorised machines and functional trainers with clean lines, neutral upholstery and finishes that sit correctly in an upmarket interior.

Unsupervised use

Guests train without an instructor and without an induction. Consoles must be readable at a glance, adjustments must be obvious, and instructional decals must be present on every station. We deliberately avoid machines that require coaching to be used safely, and we supply a printed usage notice for display at the entrance.

Three standard configurations by floor area

Floor area Property type Typical equipment list Flooring
20 to 30 m² City hotel, boutique hotel 1 treadmill, 1 cross trainer or indoor cycling bike, 1 adjustable bench with dumbbell set, 1 compact functional trainer or multi station Thin rubber gym flooring tiles or discreet shock absorbing surface
30 to 50 m² Four star hotel, tourism residence 2 treadmills, 1 cross trainer, 1 indoor cycling bike, 1 rower, 2 to 3 selectorised machines (chest press, lat pulldown, compact leg press), free weight area with bench Sports floor with mirrored zone
50 to 100 m² Resort, palace, large hotel Cardio zone with 3 to 4 different machines, 5 to 8 selectorised machines, free weight area, stretching and yoga zone, optional functional training rig Zoned flooring, heavier tiles under the free weight area

Above 50 m² the layout moves from a single room to differentiated zones. That is also the point at which a functional training area or a small wellness offer becomes worth adding, for example a cold plunge bath or a Pilates reformer alongside the gym floor.

Compliance for a publicly accessible fitness room

A hotel gym open to guests is a public access building area under French and wider European building regulations, and the same logic applies in most European jurisdictions. Three points drive the file:

  • Equipment must comply with EN 957 (EN ISO 20957), the European standard for stationary training equipment, including the class of use appropriate to unsupervised commercial operation.
  • Circulation widths must meet accessibility rules for people with reduced mobility, typically 1.40 m of clear circulation.
  • The floor covering needs a fire classification compatible with public access premises.

We supply conformity certificates, user manuals and installation reports for every project, which is the documentation your insurer and your safety inspector will ask for. Full detail is on our standards and compliance page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum floor area for a hotel fitness room?

20 to 30 m² is enough for a boutique or city hotel: one treadmill, one cross trainer, one adjustable bench and a dumbbell set. Allow 30 to 50 m² for a four star property with two or three selectorised machines. Above 50 m² the room can be split into distinct cardio, strength and stretching zones.

How do we limit noise transmission to nearby bedrooms?

Three measures combine well: magnetic resistance bikes and rowers, treadmills with advanced deck cushioning, and rubber gym flooring tiles laid with anti vibration pads under the cardio machines. If the room is above or adjacent to bedrooms, the floor thickness and underlay should be validated before the equipment is ordered.

Do we need a maintenance contract?

It is strongly recommended when the room is open continuously and used without supervision. Our contracts include one annual preventive visit and a callout within 48 working hours in the event of a breakdown, from 350 EUR excluding VAT per year for a small room.

Guests train unsupervised. What precautions are expected?

Choose machines with intuitive consoles and simple adjustments, display usage rules visible from the entrance, and keep a maintenance log up to date. Those three items form the basis of the file your insurer will expect after an incident.

Can you equip several properties in a group under one specification?

Yes. Multi site rollouts are quoted as a single specification with a per property equipment list, which keeps the guest experience consistent across the group and simplifies spare parts management. Contact us with the property list and the floor area of each room.
