An outdoor treadmill is built to live permanently outside, which changes everything about how it is made: stainless or galvanised steel, anticorrosion epoxy coating, and in most cases no motor and no mains supply at all. That makes it a realistic addition to a fitness trail, a municipal park, a campsite, a military base or a hotel garden, where a conventional treadmill could not survive a season.

A non-motorised belt has two practical consequences on a public site. There is no electrical connection to run, which removes the trenching and the supply point from the project cost. And the running speed is set entirely by the user, so the machine adapts to a walker and a runner without a control panel that could be vandalised or misused.
