Why plate loaded rather than selectorised
Three reasons come up in practice. Load is not capped by a stack, so strong athletes are not limited. The resistance curve follows the lever arm of the machine, which feels closer to a barbell than a cable and stack assembly. And there is less to go wrong mechanically, since there are no cables or pulleys carrying the whole load, which reduces the maintenance burden in a high traffic facility. The trade off is handling: plates have to be loaded, unloaded and stored.
Planning the layout
Plate loaded areas need disc storage within reach of every machine, otherwise plates end up on the floor and the area becomes a hazard. Allow for that in the floor plan, along with rubber gym flooring tiles rated for the loads involved. Stationary training equipment for gym use falls under EN ISO 20957-1 class S.
