A free-weight row with a fixed pivot

The T-bar row sits between a barbell row and a machine row. The load is real free weight on Olympic plates, so the user still has to control the bar and brace the trunk, but the far end of the lever is anchored, which removes the balance problem and lets the lifter concentrate on pulling. It is the row that produces the heaviest usable loads for the mid-back, and it takes far less floor space than a bent-over barbell row needs for safe clearance.

Does it need to be bolted to the floor?

Not normally. The plate load holds the front of the frame down and the user’s position stabilises the rest. On a slippery floor a rubber mat under the base is worth adding.

How much clearance is needed around it?

Allow approximately one metre behind the user for the pulling stance and access on the loading side. In practice around 3.5 m2 including circulation, which is considerably less than a free barbell row area requires.
