An outdoor fitness trail is a series of exercise stations laid out along a walking or running route, freely accessible and designed to stay outdoors all year. The GardenFit range lets local authorities, campsites, companies, schools and public sports facilities build a graded circuit from a handful of stations to a full trail. Light In Fitness advises on apparatus selection, station sequencing, suitable surfacing and the preparation of a professional quotation for tender files.

Who an outdoor fitness trail is for

Municipalities and intercommunal authorities, campsites and open air hotels, companies developing their grounds, schools and outdoor activity centres. What these sites share is freely accessible equipment, exposed all year, for which maintenance has to stay marginal. That constraint drives the material choice and the fixing detail more than any aesthetic consideration.

How to size the trail

The number of stations follows from the available route length and the intended user profile. Progression between stations matters as much as their number: a poorly graded trail becomes unusable for part of the public, typically older users or beginners. Every station imposes a peripheral safety zone that must be integrated into the layout plan before ordering.

Route length Indicative station count Typical station mix
Under 300 m 4 to 6 Stretching, balance, parallel bars, abdominal bench
300 m to 800 m 6 to 10 Above plus wall bars, horizontal ladder, step ups
800 m to 1 500 m 10 to 15 Full circuit with body weight strength and coordination
Over 1 500 m 15 or more Graded loops, signage, optional accessible stations

Standards and public procurement

Freely accessible outdoor fitness equipment falls under EN 16630, which sets the safety requirements, the protection zones and the maintenance plan. Technical sheets, declarations of conformity and test reports are supplied from the moment the offer is issued, which is what a public tender file requires. ASTM F3101 certification is available as an option on part of the range. Where the trail crosses a declared play area, EN 1176 and EN 1177 apply to that section.

Installation and maintenance

Stations are anchored in concrete footings sized to the apparatus and the ground. Standard delivery covers France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg; export is priced per project. Stocked references ship in 5 to 10 working days. Maintenance consists of routine visual inspection, checking fixings and clearing vegetation around safety zones, plus an annual main inspection. Warranty runs from 2 to 5 years depending on the range, with extensions available on steel structures.

Frequently asked questions

How far apart should stations be placed?

Spacing depends on the intent. A conditioning circuit works with stations close enough to keep the heart rate up, often 30 m to 80 m apart, while a walking trail through a park can space them several hundred metres apart. What is not negotiable is the safety zone around each station, which is fixed by the apparatus and the standard.

Can a trail be made accessible to wheelchair users?

Part of the range is designed for reduced mobility use, with ground level access, wide manoeuvring space and simple controls. An accessible trail also needs a firm, level approach surface along the route, so the path specification matters as much as the apparatus. We can mix accessible and standard stations on one circuit.

Is signage included?

Instruction panels showing the exercise and its correct execution are available for the range and are strongly recommended on unsupervised sites. They reduce misuse and support the operator’s duty of information. Confirm at quotation stage whether you need panels in more than one language.

Send us the route length, the site plan and the intended public, and we will return a station sequence with a layout drawing and prices. Request a quotation for a reply within 24 working hours.
