The horizontal pull that balances the press
Any gym that installs a chest press and does not install a row is building a membership with a pulling deficit. Horizontal pulling loads the mid-trapezius, rhomboids and posterior deltoid, the muscles that hold the shoulder blade in position against a day of desk work. The SPG005 provides that pattern seated, with a chest pad that prevents the lumbar rounding and torso swing seen on cable rows.
- Seated horizontal row loading mid-back, rhomboids and biceps
- 102 kg pin-selected stack
- Chest support preventing torso assistance and lumbar loading
- 1,120 x 1,515 mm footprint, 1,650 mm height
- 248 kg machine weight, maximum user weight 180 kg
Postural programmes and corporate gyms
Rowing is the anchor movement of every postural programme sold to corporate clients. In a workplace gym with a short session format, a chest-supported row lets an instructor prescribe pulling volume that members can perform correctly without supervision. It is also the station that most often appears in health-referral circuits alongside the lat pulldown.
Comparing it with the SPG006 lat pulldown
The row pulls horizontally and emphasises the mid-back; the pulldown pulls vertically and emphasises the latissimus dorsi. They are complements, not alternatives, and a back zone specified with only one of them will leave a gap. Where budget forces a choice, the row is the more commonly used station in general-membership facilities, and its 1,650 mm height is easier to accommodate than the pulldown at 2,130 mm.

Frequently asked questions
Is the chest pad position adjustable?
The seat is set so that the chest rests against the pad with the arms extended at the start of the pull, without the shoulders being pulled forward out of the socket. Getting this right is what makes the station a mid-back exercise rather than an arm exercise.
Can it be used single-arm?
Members frequently work one arm at a time to address side-to-side differences. Load per side should be recorded separately when doing so.
How does it compare with a plate-loaded row?
Selectorised is faster between sets and requires no plate storage, which matters in a circuit. Plate-loaded rows allow higher peak loads and independent arm paths. See our comparison of selectorised and plate-loaded machines for the full trade-off.
