Description
The Gold SPG020 Ellipse is a leg press built around an adjustable seat and a guided footplate, designed for targeted lower-body work in commercial gyms and fitness centres. Resistance is set to match the user and increased session by session, and an integrated safety system holds the load if a repetition fails. Professional price: 2,550 EUR excluding VAT.
Targeted lower-body loading
A leg press loads the quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes through a guided path, with the trunk supported throughout. That removes the spinal compression of a barbell squat, which is why the machine is used both by trained members pushing heavy loads and by users who cannot or should not load the spine axially, including older members and people in supervised rehabilitation.
- Adjustable seat and backrest for a comfortable, repeatable starting position
- Guided footplate with progressive resistance adjustment
- Integrated safety system, so the station can be used without a spotter
- Lateral handles for trunk stabilisation during the press
- Foot position on the plate can be varied to shift emphasis between quadriceps and posterior chain
- Primary muscles: quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes
Setting up a user
Adjust the seat and backrest so the starting knee angle is comfortable and the lower back stays in contact with the pad. Place the feet on the plate at hip width, press through the heels while exhaling until the legs are extended, and keep a slight bend at the knee rather than locking out. Return under control while inhaling. Set the load below working level for the first sets, and warm up on a treadmill or cross trainer before the first heavy series.
Where it belongs
Commercial gyms, fitness centres, coaching studios and physical preparation rooms. The leg press is normally the highest-traffic station in a lower-body zone, so it is worth specifying alongside a leg extension and a leg curl rather than on its own, to spread demand across three machines during peak hours.

Frequently asked questions
Leg press or squat?
They are complementary rather than interchangeable. The squat loads the whole kinetic chain including the trunk and the spine. The leg press isolates the legs with the back supported, which allows heavier loading of the quadriceps and glutes without spinal compression, and makes the movement usable by members who cannot squat.
Does foot placement change the exercise?
Yes. A higher, wider foot position shifts emphasis towards the glutes and hamstrings; a lower, narrower position loads the quadriceps more. Coaching that adjustment is the simplest way to get two distinct exercises from a single station.
Is it suitable for beginners?
Yes, with a short induction. The guided path and the integrated safety system make the movement safe to perform alone once seat position and load have been set correctly, which is why it is usually one of the first strength stations introduced to a new member.
