Description
The Bodytone Solid Grow SG56 is a plate-loaded standing hip abduction machine with a recommended maximum load of 84 kg on 50 mm Olympic sleeves. It trains the gluteus medius and the hip abductors in a standing position, and is supplied by Light In Fitness at 1,669.10 EUR excluding VAT.
Standing, not seated, and that changes the exercise
A seated abduction machine isolates the hip abductors with the trunk supported. Standing removes that support: the stance leg has to stabilise the pelvis while the working leg abducts, so the whole lateral chain is recruited, not just the muscle being loaded. That is much closer to how the gluteus medius actually functions during gait and single-leg landing, which is why physical preparation and injury-prevention programmes favour the standing version.
- Guided lateral leg movement against plate resistance
- Recommended maximum load of 84 kg
- 50 mm Olympic sleeves; plates supplied separately
- Target muscles: gluteus medius and hip abductors
Why hip abduction earns its place
Weak hip abductors show up as knee valgus under load, as lateral hip pain in runners, and as poor balance in older members. It is one of the few isolation movements with a direct, documented link to knee and hip injury risk, and it is difficult to load properly with bands or bodyweight beyond a beginner level. A dedicated station lets a coach progress the load in a measurable way, which is the point of putting it on the floor rather than in a warm-up.
Solid Grow: the practical range for smaller sites
Solid Grow is Bodytone’s entry to mid-range plate-loaded line, dimensioned for studios, independent coaches and high-end residential gyms rather than for high-traffic commercial floors. The load ceiling of 84 kg on this station is set accordingly, and is comfortably above what any user will apply to a single-leg abduction movement.

Frequently asked questions
Can one machine train both legs?
Yes. The user turns to face the other way and works the opposite leg, which is how a standing abduction station is normally used. Each side is loaded and progressed independently, so an asymmetry can be addressed directly.
Is it useful in rehabilitation?
It is frequently specified for that. Standing abduction under controlled plate load is a standard progression after hip and knee procedures, and the fine increments possible with small plates suit a return-to-load protocol better than a stack with 5 kg steps.
What plates should be ordered with it?
A 50 kg set of 50 mm plates per machine is the usual specification, with light 1.25 kg and 2.5 kg discs included, since progression on this movement is made in small steps.
