How to choose the right flooring for a CrossFit box

Choosing the floor of a cross-training box means weighing up several key factors at once. CrossFit is an intense, demanding sport, so the surface has to combine durability, resistance to wear and shock absorption. Among the surfaces most commonly used in training boxes, PVC comes up first. Polyvinyl chloride is popular because of its toughness, its ease of maintenance and its lifespan.

PVC interlocking tiles

Clip-together PVC tiles are particularly appreciated because they are easy to lay and easy to replace when a zone wears out. That matters in a box, where one square metre under the rig takes far more punishment than the rest of the room. PVC also offers good acoustic and sound insulation, which helps reduce the noise generated during training.

Vinyl flooring

Another popular surface for cross-training is vinyl. Vinyl floors come as planks or as rolls and offer a wide variety of finishes and colours.

They are usually covered with a wear layer that makes them resistant to impact, abrasion and moisture. Vinyl floors are also valued for their ease of maintenance and their installation. Some models come with a clip system for quick, straightforward laying.

Laminate flooring

Laminate is another type of flooring found in training rooms. Laminate floors imitate the appearance of wood and offer strong durability and resistance to wear. They come in different ranges and finishes, giving a wide choice to suit every style and requirement. They are easy to lay thanks to their interlocking system and can be used in damp rooms thanks to their moisture resistance.

One caveat follows from the point below: laminate is a surface for circulation areas, warm-up zones and reception, not for a platform where loaded barbells are dropped. For that part of the floor the answer is rubber.

Rubber flooring

For anyone looking for a softer, less abrasive surface, rubber floors are a strong option. Rubber floors offer high resistance to impact and abrasion and are extremely hard-wearing. They are also non-slip, which makes them particularly suited to strength and weight training exercises. Rubber floors come as rolls or as tiles and can be bonded or loose-laid.

This is why the drop zone under a rig is almost always a rubber tile: our rubber gym flooring tiles cover the general training floor, and the weightlifting rubber tiles take the loaded lifts. A tile such as the 40 mm CrossFit rubber tile is the format usually chosen for the platform itself.

Acoustics: the factor that is forgotten too often

Finally, it is important to note that whichever type of flooring is chosen for a training box, acoustic and sound insulation must be taken into account.

Cross-training sessions generate a great deal of noise, so the flooring installed has to reduce that nuisance. In a shared building or a unit with neighbours above or below, this is often the point that decides the specification, well before the colour of the tile.

Frequently asked questions

Which flooring for the barbell drop zone?

Rubber. It resists impact and abrasion, it is non-slip and it is the surface suited to strength and weight training exercises, available as tiles or as rolls.

Are PVC tiles suitable for a training box?

Yes. Clip-together PVC tiles lay easily, can be replaced individually as they wear, and give good acoustic and sound insulation.

Tiles or rolls?

Tiles are replaced one by one where the floor takes the most punishment. Rolls give a continuous surface. Both can be bonded or loose-laid depending on the room.

Does the floor really change the noise level?

Yes. Training generates a lot of noise, and the flooring is the main lever for reducing it, which is why acoustic insulation belongs in the specification from the start.

Specifying your box floor

In conclusion, choosing the right flooring for a cross-training box is decisive for the safety and the comfort of the athletes. PVC, vinyl, laminate and rubber floors each offer worthwhile characteristics, whether in terms of resistance, durability, acoustic insulation or shock absorption. All of these factors should be weighed before making a choice, so as to guarantee the best possible training environment.

Send us the area of the room, the position of the rig and the platforms, and the constraints of the building: we come back with a setting-out plan and a priced proposal. Browse the range of rubber gym flooring tiles, or request a quote.
