Magnetic resistance versus air resistance

On an air ski erg the resistance is produced by a fan and rises mechanically with cadence: pull faster and it gets harder, slow down and it gets easier. It is impossible to hold a high resistance at a low stroke rate.

The Xebex uses a magnetic brake driven by the console across 16 levels. The selected resistance stays constant whatever the cadence, which unlocks two training modes an air unit cannot separate:

• High resistance at low cadence for upper body strength and strength endurance, reproducing a sustained pole push
• Low resistance at high cadence for pure cardiovascular work and high rate intervals
• 16 discrete levels instead of a ten position damper, so a coach can prescribe an exact level to a whole group and repeat it session after session

Muscles worked

The double poling action loads the latissimus dorsi as prime mover, with the triceps in elbow extension, the posterior deltoids and rhomboids in scapular retraction, and the pectorals in the first part of the pull. The abdominals and trunk stabilisers work continuously. With the feet fixed and the movement kept in the upper body, the legs contribute very little, which makes the machine useful for intense conditioning without lower limb fatigue, and for members recovering from a lower limb injury.

Modular architecture

The unit is built from separately referenced components. The main frame ASK-2 carries the console, the magnetic system and the ski arms, and ships with a mains adapter and the wall mount ASK-1WM. The floor stand ASK-1FS, at 15.8 kg, makes the unit free standing and is ordered separately. The battery box ASK-1BC gives around 120 hours of use away from a socket on four C cells. The pull bar ASK-1PB turns the machine into a multi exercise pulling station: lat pulldown, seated row, chest press and cable work.

Does it suit Hyrox preparation?

Yes. Station 1 of a Hyrox race is a 1,000 m ski erg, so athletes need hours on the machine to build technique, power and specific endurance. Stroke and watt tracking lets progress be measured over a fixed distance exactly as it is scored in competition.

What ceiling height is required?

The assembled frame is 207 cm high and the arms travel above head height at the start of the stroke, so allow 230 cm of clear ceiling as a minimum and 240 cm or more for users above 1.90 m.

Is the floor stand included?

No. The frame ships with the mains adapter and the wall mount. If you want a free standing installation rather than a wall fixed one, order the ASK-1FS floor stand with the machine, so tell us your intended configuration when you request a quotation.
