Light In Fitness designs, supplies and installs outdoor fitness trails for local authorities, companies, campsites, holiday villages, schools and residential developments. A fitness trail is not a small outdoor gym: it is a series of fixed stations distributed along a walking or running route, each carrying its own signage, built for free and unsupervised use. This guide sets out what a trail contains, which standard governs it, and how a project is scoped before quotation.

What an outdoor fitness trail actually is

A trail combines two things that are often bought separately: the apparatus, and the route that links it. Stations are permanently anchored into the ground and spaced along a path, so users move between them on foot. Every station carries instructional signage, because no instructor is present. The equipment has to be self-explanatory, and the exercise it allows has to be safe for an untrained adult arriving alone.

That single constraint, open access without supervision, drives every design decision. Resistance comes from body weight or from fixed loads rather than adjustable stacks. Moving parts are enclosed or damped. There is nothing loose to remove, and no setting a user can get wrong. It is the opposite of an indoor facility, where staff, induction and membership control who uses what.

EN 16630, the standard for adult outdoor equipment

Permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment for adults falls under EN 16630. It covers the apparatus, its anchoring, entrapment risks, the free space required around each station and the information that must be displayed. For a public buyer this is the reference to quote in a tender: it is what separates certified sports equipment from garden furniture that merely looks athletic.

One distinction matters and is regularly confused. Equipment for children is a separate family, governed by EN 1176-1 for the structures and EN 1177 for the impact attenuating surfacing. The two families are never interchangeable, and EN 16630 is never the right reference for an installation intended for children. If your site mixes an adult trail and a play area, the two zones are specified, surfaced and inspected under different rules.

Surfacing under the stations

Stations are installed on a receiving surface suited to the equipment and to the fall height involved. On a play area the surfacing is the subject of its own standard, EN 1177, and loose fill such as calibrated wood chips is one of the accepted solutions. Surfacing is not a finishing touch added at the end of the works: it is specified at the same time as the stations, because it determines excavation depth, drainage and the footprint of each zone.

Who buys a fitness trail

  • Local authorities and park operators, adding free open air provision to a green space or a riverside path.
  • Campsites and holiday villages, extending the activity offer without adding supervised staff.
  • Hotels and residential developments, where a trail is a shared amenity rather than a staffed gym.
  • Companies, installing a route on a business park for employee use.
  • Schools, clubs and rehabilitation centres, where equipment is used under supervision but installed outdoors.

Ranges and station families

The GardenFit range groups the outdoor trail stations: leg press, air walker and comparable units designed for repeated, unsupervised use. Stations can be specified individually or as a complete route. Browse the outdoor fitness trail category for the full range, or the fitness trail stations if you are extending an existing route with a few units. For sites that must be usable by wheelchair users, the accessible outdoor gym range covers stations designed for inclusive access.

Typical units include the Triple Leg Press BLO-067 and the Triple Air Walker BLO-062, both configured so that several users can train at the same station at once, which matters on a public route at peak times.

Materials, warranty and track record

Material choice is the main lever on lifespan and on maintenance cost. Light In Fitness warrants its steel structures for up to 20 years and its stainless steel structures for life. Coastal, poolside and heavily salted sites are where stainless steel earns its price difference; inland parks are usually specified in coated steel.

The company has equipped more than 500 establishments since 2013. That is the figure worth asking any supplier for: not the size of the catalogue, but the number of installed sites still standing.

Frequently asked questions

Does a fitness trail need supervision?

No. A trail is designed for free access precisely so that it does not require staff. That is why the equipment is fixed, the loads are not adjustable and every station is signposted.

Can the same equipment serve adults and children?

No. Adult stations are certified to EN 16630, and equipment for children to EN 1176-1 with EN 1177 surfacing. Mixing them is a compliance problem, not a design choice. Sites that want both install two separate zones.

How many stations does a route need?

It depends on the length of the path, the expected number of simultaneous users and the budget. There is no standard count, and any supplier quoting one without seeing your site plan is guessing.

What has to be prepared before installation?

Ground survey, access for the installation team, the position of buried services along the route, and the choice of surfacing at each station. These are settled at the quotation stage, not on the day of the works.

Scoping your project

Send us the site plan, the route length, the intended users and any constraint on surfacing or access. From that we specify the station list, the surfacing and the installation sequence. Request a quote and the proposal comes back with the standards, the materials and the warranty stated line by line.
