Timber or steel for an outdoor fitness trail: a material comparison

by Michaël Galy / Wednesday, 04 March 2026 / Published in Parcours sportifs, Street Workout et Outdoor

On an outdoor fitness trail, the material decision drives the ten year budget more than the equipment list does. Two families dominate the European market: timber, mainly black locust, pressure treated pine and Douglas fir, and steel, either hot dip galvanised and powder coated or stainless. Each has genuine advantages and real limits. This comparison gives a purchasing authority the figures it needs to decide: service life, total cost of ownership, maintenance, vandalism resistance, landscape integration and compliance with EN 16630.

Short answer. There is no universally correct material. Black locust and hot dip galvanised powder coated steel sit at the same service life in standard conditions, 20 to 30 years, and the choice between them is driven by setting and maintenance capability. Pressure treated pine is cheaper to buy and usually the most expensive over ten years. Stainless steel is the only material that holds up in a coastal atmosphere, at two to three times the purchase cost, so it should be specified where the environment requires it and not as a general upgrade.

The materials, described accurately

Timber species are graded for exterior use by their resistance to moisture and biological attack, and a fitness trail requires use class 4 as a minimum.

Black locust, Robinia pseudoacacia, is a European species naturally in use class 4 and durable without chemical treatment. Its hardness and its resistance to splintering make it the reference for surfaces in direct contact with users. Estimated service life is 20 to 30 years depending on exposure.

Pressure treated Scots or maritime pine is treatable by pressure impregnation and cheap to buy. Realistic outdoor service life under heavy public use is 10 to 15 years, and field experience shows the most loaded components, ground posts and low rails, needing replacement from year 7 to 10. Surface treatment has to be renewed periodically, and the timber can distort or splinter through wet and dry cycles.

Douglas fir is naturally use class 3 and brought to class 4 by treatment, with a service life of 15 to 20 years. It is visually attractive but greys quickly if left unmaintained, and it is less dense than black locust.

On the steel side, plain steel is unsuitable outdoors. Hot dip galvanised steel is immersed in molten zinc at around 450 degrees Celsius, producing a metallurgically bonded layer of typically 70 to 150 micrometres, with a service life of 25 to 40 years in urban or rural atmospheres. Zinc acts as a sacrificial anode, so a scratch does not immediately expose the steel. Hot dip galvanised and powder coated steel adds an epoxy or polyester powder cured at 180 to 200 degrees, giving a second barrier and an unlimited colour range, and it is the most common construction among manufacturers supplying EN 16630 compliant trails, with 20 to 30 years of service life under minimal maintenance. Stainless steel 316L is an austenitic alloy containing molybdenum for chloride resistance, with 25 to 50 years or more of service life including marine environments, at two to three times the purchase cost of galvanised steel.

What EN 16630 requires of the materials

EN 16630 covers the design, installation and maintenance of permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment in free public access, intended for adolescents and adults from 1.40 m in height. On materials it requires demonstrated resistance to rain, frost, ultraviolet light and temperature variation, the absence of toxic substances, so treatments such as CCA and creosote are excluded and coatings must comply with REACH, structural strength under the dynamic loads of intensive sporting use, a periodic inspection regime with frequent visual checks, quarterly operational inspections and an annual main inspection, and safety zones with a clearance of 1.50 m around each item and impact attenuating surfacing wherever the free height of fall exceeds the threshold.

A legal point worth stating: EN 16630 is a standard, not a statute, and in France it is not in itself legally binding. Failure to comply nonetheless exposes the authority to civil and criminal liability in the event of an accident, and it is referenced as a matter of course in public contracts for outdoor sports facilities.

Total cost of ownership, not purchase price

For a public buyer, purchase price commonly represents only 20 to 40 per cent of the real cost over ten years. Maintenance, part replacement and technical staff time make the difference.

Galvanised and powder coated steel needs a quarterly visual inspection, an annual pressure wash and touch up on deep scratches, with annual maintenance cost estimated at 1 to 2 per cent of initial value. Black locust needs oiling or a stain every two to three years plus a check of the stainless fixings at each visit, at a slightly higher annual cost than steel but with no predictable structural replacement within fifteen years. Pressure treated pine needs annual surface treatment, is prone to swelling and splitting in continental climates, and can require partial replacement from year 7, which makes it the most expensive of the four over ten years despite the lowest purchase price.

Verified catalogue reference points, excluding VAT, to build an estimate: hot dip galvanised and powder coated steel outdoor rowing station at 1,470 EUR, galvanised steel cross trainer station at 1,430 EUR, wooden fitness trail pulse station at 1,950 EUR, two level balance beam at 640 EUR, and a four station stainless steel outdoor rig at 11,999 EUR.

Ten year cost profile at a glance

Material Purchase cost Annual maintenance Likely replacement within 10 years Ten year position
Black locust Medium to high Oiling every 2 to 3 years, fixing checks None expected Medium
Pressure treated pine Low to medium Annual surface treatment Partial, from year 7 Highest of the four
Galvanised and powder coated steel Medium 1 to 2 per cent of initial value None expected Lowest of the four
Stainless steel 316L High Annual inspection only None expected High at purchase, lowest in operation

Frequently asked questions

Which material for a coastal site?

Stainless steel 316L, or black locust. Galvanised and powder coated steel gives a shorter service life in a chloride atmosphere unless the protection system is enhanced, and specifying it on a seafront is the most common expensive mistake we see in this category.

Can we mix materials on one trail?

Yes, and it is often the right answer. Steel for the loaded structural stations and timber for balance and agility items gives the durability where the loads are and the landscape integration where it is visible. Keep the fixings stainless throughout, whichever structure they serve.

What surfacing does an outdoor fitness trail need?

Impact attenuating surfacing wherever the free height of fall requires it, with the critical fall height determined to EN 1177 and at least equal to the free height of fall of the item. Grass is acceptable only within the limits established by test, which is a point specifications routinely get wrong.

How should we word the material requirement in a tender?

Do not write stainless or galvanised as a preference. Write the outcome: steel grade and section, coating process and coating thickness in micrometres, timber species and use class to EN 335, warranty duration, and a written commitment on spare parts availability. Those are verifiable on documents at bid analysis.
