Where to Buy an OCR Obstacle Course: A Buyer's Guide for Clubs, Campsites and Local Authorities

Buying an OCR obstacle course has little in common with entering a race. If you manage a gym, a cross-training box, a holiday village, a campsite, a school or a municipal sports department, you are not looking for a start line: you are looking for a permanent installation that dozens of different users will climb on, week after week, in a public setting. This guide covers where professional OCR obstacle courses are actually sourced, and what separates a manufacturer from a simple reseller.

Who buys an OCR obstacle course

Obstacle course racing has moved well beyond the event calendar. Circuits that used to exist only on race weekends are now built as permanent training facilities, because they answer a demand that conventional machines do not: grip strength, coordination, pulling, hanging and problem solving, in a format users actually queue up to try.

• Gyms and cross-training boxes looking for a differentiating zone rather than another row of racks.
• Campsites, holiday villages and hotels that need an all-ages attraction built for permanent outdoor exposure.
• Local authorities, schools and clubs creating free-access sports areas.
• Armed forces, fire services and rehabilitation centres using obstacles for functional testing and progressive return to activity.
• Companies running team-building days, where an obstacle course turns cooperation into something physical rather than theoretical.

Where to buy: the three sourcing routes

Race organisers. International series such as Spartan Race, and the national obstacle races that run alongside them, are the right first contact if what you want is to take part rather than to own. They can direct you to the nearest event and explain its entry conditions, including any medical clearance required, which differs from one country to the next. What they do not sell is a permanent installation.

General sports retailers. Endurance and running specialists carry the personal kit around obstacle racing, and occasionally light training accessories. They very rarely handle load-bearing structures, foundation drawings, compliance files or on-site assembly, so they are a poor starting point for a facility that has to stay standing under public use.

Specialist manufacturers. This is where a permanent OCR obstacle course is actually bought. A manufacturer designs the rig around your surface area and ceiling height, calculates the anchoring, supplies the technical and compliance documentation, delivers, installs and can extend the course later. It is also the only route where you can compare structures obstacle by obstacle instead of buying a catalogue photograph.

Indoor rig or outdoor course?

The two are engineered differently and are certified differently. Indoor equipment is specified to EN ISO 20957-1 class S, the professional class intended for supervised commercial use. Outdoor adult installations fall under EN 16630, which governs permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment, its fall heights and its safety zones.

If the same site also includes a children’s play area, that area is a separate regime: play equipment is covered by EN 1176-1 and impact-attenuating surfacing by EN 1177. The two families are never interchangeable, and EN 16630 does not apply to children’s play equipment.

What to check before you order

• Anchoring and ground conditions. Concrete foundations, ground type and drainage decide the real cost of an outdoor course far more than the rig itself.
• Fall heights, safety zones and surfacing. Ask for the safety zone drawing before you plan the layout, not after.
• Materials. Galvanised and painted steel for standard sites, stainless steel for coastal, chlorinated or very high traffic environments. Our steel structures carry a warranty of up to 20 years, and stainless steel a lifetime warranty.
• Modularity. Can obstacles be added, swapped or reordered in two years without rebuilding the frame?
• Documentation and inspection. A compliance file, an assembly manual and a documented inspection routine should come with the structure, not on request.
• Spare parts. Grips, ropes, rings and bearings are consumables on a busy course. Check they are individually available.

Can I buy a single obstacle instead of a full course?

Yes. Most operators start with one structure, typically a hanging and traverse module, then extend it once usage patterns are clear. Buying a modular frame from the outset is what makes that extension straightforward.

Is an OCR structure suitable for children?

Not the adult version. An adult OCR rig is dimensioned for adult reach and adult fall heights. A children’s area needs equipment designed to EN 1176-1 with EN 1177 surfacing, which is a different product family, not a scaled-down rig.

Do participants need medical clearance for an obstacle race?

That depends entirely on national rules and on the organiser. Requirements vary from one country to another, so check the conditions published by the event and the applicable national federation before entering.

Can an OCR course be used for corporate team building?

It is one of the strongest use cases. Obstacles force pacing, spotting and mutual help, and a permanent course lets a site run those days all year rather than once a season.
