Obstacle course racing turned a niche military drill into a mainstream leisure format, and the demand has followed it off the race circuit and onto permanent sites. Municipalities, campsites, holiday resorts, armed forces bases, cross-training boxes and residential developers are all now specifying adult obstacle courses as fixed installations rather than event scaffolding. This guide sets out what such an installation actually involves: which module families make up a course, which standard applies, how much ground it needs, and what an operator has to plan for once it is built.
What an adult obstacle course is, in procurement terms
Strip away the event marketing and an adult obstacle course is a sequence of permanently anchored structures that a user negotiates by climbing, hanging, traversing, vaulting and balancing. It sits between outdoor fitness equipment and playground structures without being either: the loads are adult, the movements are dynamic, and the user is expected to leave the ground.
That distinction matters when you write the specification. Equipment designed for supervised adult use has different geometry, different fall zones and a different inspection regime from the fitness trail stations you may already operate. Buying obstacle modules on a playground framework, or buying playground modules and calling them an obstacle course, produces an installation that will not survive its first serious inspection.
A permanent course also behaves differently from a race. There is no marshal at every obstacle and no wave start. Users arrive alone, in pairs or as a club session, at any hour the site is open. The design has to work without supervision, which is the single constraint that shapes almost every decision that follows.
Who installs one, and what they are buying
Municipalities and public authorities. Usually a free-access installation in a park or alongside an existing fitness trail, aimed at broadening who uses the site. The brief is typically durability, vandalism resistance and an inspection regime the technical services team can actually sustain.
Campsites and holiday resorts. A differentiating amenity that photographs well and gives teenagers and adults something to do. Seasonal peaks mean intense use over short periods, so specification tends toward robust finishes and low maintenance between seasons.
Cross-training boxes and functional gyms. Often an outdoor extension of an indoor rig, used for coached sessions and competition preparation. Here the buyer wants obstacle geometry close to what competitors meet on the race circuit.
Armed forces and emergency services. Training installations where the course supports a defined physical assessment. The requirement is repeatability and structural margin under heavy scheduled use.
Schools, universities and clubs. Supervised use, mixed ability, and a strong preference for modules that can be scaled or bypassed so a whole group can train together.
The standard that applies
Permanently installed outdoor fitness and obstacle equipment for adults falls under EN 16630. It is the reference that covers structural strength, entrapment, fall areas and the information the manufacturer must supply, and it is the standard a public tender or an insurer will expect to see named.
Do not let a supplier substitute a children’s playground standard here. Playground equipment is governed by its own separate framework, written around child anthropometry and child behaviour, and it is not interchangeable with adult obstacle equipment in either direction. If a course is genuinely intended for children, it must be specified and certified as children’s equipment from the outset, not adapted afterwards.
Ask for the declaration of conformity and the manufacturer’s installation and inspection documentation with the quotation. Requesting it after delivery is how sites end up with equipment they cannot open to the public.
The module families that make up a course
Most permanent adult courses are assembled from a small number of recognised obstacle families. Mixing them is what produces a course that trains the whole body rather than one that simply tires the grip.

A common specification error is buying too many hanging obstacles. They photograph well and they are the ones people remember from television, but a course composed mostly of grip-dependent modules excludes a large share of the adult population within the first thirty seconds. Balance the sequence so that a user who fails one obstacle can still complete a meaningful lap.
Progression and inclusive design
A permanent installation is used by the same people repeatedly, which is the opposite of a race. Build in progression or the course loses its audience once the novelty passes.
Two approaches work. The first is graded variants of the same obstacle, so a user moves up as capability improves. The second is a bypass route around the hardest modules, letting a mixed-ability group train together without splitting up. Municipal and campsite installations almost always benefit from the second; performance-oriented sites usually want the first.
Think about who is watching, too. Courses installed near a path or a terrace get used far more than courses tucked out of sight, because seeing other people succeed is what convinces a hesitant first-time user to try.
Ground, fall areas and surfacing
The free space around each module and the surfacing beneath it are defined by the standard and by the manufacturer’s data sheet for that specific obstacle. Never scale a fall area from a drawing or assume that two modules of similar height need the same clearance; take the figures from the documentation supplied with the equipment.
Surfacing choice usually comes down to site conditions and budget. Loose fill is economical and drains well but needs regular raking and topping up to keep its performance. Bonded and tile systems cost more initially and hold their characteristics with far less intervention, which often makes them cheaper across the life of a municipal installation. Grass alone is rarely adequate under modules where users leave the ground.
Drainage deserves attention before anything is anchored. A course that becomes unusable for weeks after heavy rain, or that turns into a mud bath at its busiest point, will be blamed on the equipment rather than on the groundworks.
Layout and footprint
Plan the course as a circulation problem, not a shopping list. Users need somewhere to queue that is not inside another obstacle’s fall area, a clear direction of travel, and an exit that does not run back through the entrance. Where a course is likely to be used for timed laps, a loop layout works better than a linear one.
Leave room for the equipment you have not bought yet. Sites that succeed almost always extend, and a layout with no space to grow forces the second phase into a corner where it will not be used.
Inspection and ongoing operation
An unsupervised adult installation needs a written inspection regime and someone whose job it is to carry it out. Routine visual checks catch vandalism, missing fixings and surfacing displacement. Periodic detailed inspections cover structural condition, corrosion at ground level and wear on ropes, nets and moving parts. Ropes and nets are consumables on a busy course; budget for their replacement rather than treating it as a fault.
Keep the inspection records. If an incident occurs, documented inspection history is what demonstrates the site was operated responsibly.
