Description
The 60 mm rubber shock absorbing tile is the Light In Fitness specification for a 2 m critical fall height, supplied in a 100 x 100 cm format at 78 EUR per square metre excluding VAT. Manufactured from SBR rubber with a fine grain surface and classified Efl for reaction to fire under EN 13501-1, it is tested to EN 1177 and is the reference thickness under street workout rigs, playground structures and high intensity training zones.
This is a safety surfacing product before it is a gym floor. Below 60 mm, a rubber tile cannot bring the head injury criterion under the EN 1177 limit for equipment where a user can fall from around 2 m, which covers the great majority of pull up bars, parallel bars and composite outdoor stations. Specified correctly, it also gives the deepest impact and noise attenuation in the standard indoor range.

Installation under equipment
A tile used as impact attenuation must be bonded, not loose laid. Outdoors, the reference build up is a free draining concrete slab, a polyurethane adhesive and the tiles bonded across the whole footprint of the structure, extended to the impact area required by the equipment standard, which for outdoor fitness equipment to EN 16630 means a safety zone of 1.50 m around the apparatus. Playground structures are dimensioned to EN 1176 and their impact area to EN 1177 on the same principle.
Before ordering, measure the free fall height, meaning the vertical distance between the highest point a user can stand or hang from and the finished surface. If that figure exceeds 2 m, this thickness is no longer sufficient and a thicker tile is required. Do not stack two thinner tiles to reach 60 mm: the tested value applies to the tile as manufactured, not to an assembly.
Indoor use and acoustic performance
Indoors, the 60 mm tile is specified in weightlifting and high volume drop zones, under indoor rigs where the free fall height requires attenuation, and in premises where impact noise transmission to adjoining spaces is the binding constraint. It is also used in industrial and technical areas where dropped tools and traffic damage a bare slab.
Cleaning is limited to sweeping and washing with water and a neutral detergent. Outdoors, keep the drainage path clear and inspect the bonded joints during the annual equipment inspection so that any lifted edge is re bonded before it becomes a trip hazard.

Is a 60 mm tile mandatory under a street workout rig?
What is mandatory is an impact attenuating surface matched to the free fall height of the structure. For a standard rig with bars at around 2 m, a tile tested to a 2 m critical fall height is the usual answer, bonded across the footprint and the safety zone. For rigs with higher access points, move to a thicker tile with a certified 3 m value.
Can it be laid directly on compacted gravel?
No. The tested attenuation assumes a rigid, even support. Outdoors, use a free draining concrete slab. On an unstable or uneven base the tile deflects unpredictably and the tested performance no longer applies.
How does the price compare with a poured rubber surface?
A tile is bought per square metre with no wet trade on site, so the installed cost is easier to control and a damaged area can be replaced tile by tile. A poured surface gives a seamless finish and free geometry but needs a specialist crew and dry weather. We quote both approaches within 24 working hours.
