Description
For playgrounds that want a natural loose-fill surface with more durability than sand, rounded gravel is the engineer’s choice. Every stone in this washed 2-8 mm aggregate is rolled smooth – no cutting edges anywhere children play – and the resulting layer combines reliable impact absorption with a surface that stands up to weather and heavy traffic year after year.
Why rounded grains change everything
Crushed aggregate is unsuitable around children; this gravel is specifically selected for its rolled, edge-free grading. The rounded stones move against each other under impact – which is precisely what dissipates the energy of a fall – while remaining comfortable to walk, kneel and inevitably dig in. Unlike organic loose fill, gravel does not decompose, resists moisture and keeps its damping properties without seasonal replacement.
- Grading: calibrated rounded gravel, 2 to 8 mm
- Washed, with no sharp edges – suitable for direct contact with children
- Layer depth: 20 to 30 cm, varied to the required critical fall height (HIC)
- Homogeneous grading selected for consistent impact absorption
- Durable, rot-free and free-draining
Certified under EN 1176 / EN 1177
The surfacing is certified compliant with the safety standards applicable to playgrounds (EN 1176 / EN 1177) by an independent certification body, subject to the recommended layer depth for the fall height of the installed equipment – defined zone by zone in our layout study.

Frequently asked questions
Gravel or sand – which loose fill should I choose?
Gravel drains faster, resists compaction and attracts fewer animals; sand offers softer sensory play for the youngest children. Many projects zone the two: gravel under climbing equipment, sand in the toddler corner.
Does gravel scatter outside the play area?
Less than lighter fills, but a proper containment border remains essential to keep the certified depth in place; we quote gravel and edging as one package.
How often must the layer be checked?
Depth should be verified during routine playground inspections, with raking under high-wear zones such as swing seats; the material itself does not degrade.
