Hybrid rubber and artificial turf tile, 100 x 100 cm and 25 mm

This hybrid tile combines 15 mm of high density UV treated artificial turf with a 10 mm base of recycled SBR rubber at 900 kg per cubic metre, hot vulcanised together into a single monolithic block rather than glued. Total thickness is 25 mm over a 100 x 100 cm format, and the tile is certified to EN 1177. It gives the appearance of grass all year with no watering and no mowing, drains naturally through its micro porous structure, and lays loose without adhesive or tools. What the two layer construction can and cannot do

The 25 mm quoted is the total thickness including the turf, and the split between the layers determines the performance. Cushioning comes from the 10 mm rubber base plus the spring effect of the turf fibres, so this is not equivalent to a solid 25 mm rubber tile, which offers 25 mm of cushioning material and is certified to EN 1177 for a critical fall height of 1.00 metre. On a play area it is the certified critical fall height that governs the specification, not the stated thickness, and that figure must be checked against the equipment being installed.

Where the hybrid construction earns its place is in settings that need the look and feel of grass with a stable, drained, maintenance free surface: outdoor fitness areas, terraces, roof top training zones, the surround of a play or leisure area, and indoor spaces where a turf finish is wanted without laying a full synthetic pitch. Because bonding is by hot vulcanisation rather than adhesive, the turf cannot delaminate from the base the way a glued assembly eventually does under sun and foot traffic.

Installation is loose laid. The self weight of the dense rubber base holds the tiles in position, which means no adhesive, no tools and a floor that can be lifted and relaid or extended later. Drainage happens through the micro porous rubber, so no falls or drainage layer need to be built into the substrate for surface water. Maintenance is limited to sweeping or vacuuming, occasional brushing of the fibres and washing with water and a neutral detergent.

Can it be used under play equipment?

Only if the certified critical fall height matches the free height of fall of the equipment concerned. EN 1177 certification is stated for this tile, and the applicable fall height should be confirmed with us against your equipment before ordering.

Does the turf fade outdoors?

The turf is UV treated, which is what protects it against discolouration in prolonged sunlight. It keeps a grass appearance year round without watering or mowing.

Is any substrate preparation required?

The surface must be clean, level and stable. Because the tile drains through its own structure and lays loose, no adhesive and no additional drainage layer are needed for surface water.
