Description
Sand is the original playground surface – and when it is properly specified, it remains one of the best. This washed play sand combines genuine impact attenuation with the sensory play value no synthetic surface can offer: for young children, the ground itself becomes part of the playground.
Economical, natural, and genuinely protective
The sand is washed and free of impurities and coarse particles, calibrated to a fine 0.2-2 mm grading chosen for its homogeneous texture and damping capacity. Laid at a depth of 20 to 30 cm – adjusted to the critical fall height (HIC) required by the equipment above – it forms a certified impact-attenuating layer that drains freely and limits standing water.
- Grading: calibrated fine sand, 0.2 to 2 mm
- Layer depth: 20 to 30 cm, varied to the required critical fall height (HIC)
- Washed, free of impurities and coarse particles
- Free-draining surface limiting water stagnation
- Natural appearance that suits landscaped and early-years play areas
Certified under EN 1176 / EN 1177
The surfacing is certified compliant with the safety standards applicable to playgrounds (EN 1176 / EN 1177) by an independent certification body, provided the recommended layer depth for the equipment fall height is respected – a parameter our layout study fixes for each zone of your play area.

Frequently asked questions
How much maintenance does a sand surface need?
Loose fill requires periodic raking to redistribute displaced material – particularly under swings and slide exits – and topping up to maintain the certified depth; both fit naturally into the routine inspections playgrounds already require.
Why does layer depth matter so much?
The certification holds only if the depth matches the equipment fall height: 20 cm and 30 cm layers protect against different critical fall heights, so each zone is specified individually in our study.
Does sand need a border?
Yes – a containment edge in concrete, timber or synthetic material keeps the layer at depth and out of the surrounding area; we quote surfacing and edging together.
