Description

The Pearl Asterisk interlocking tile is a polypropylene sports surface measuring 30.48 x 30.48 x 1.38 cm, priced from 24 EUR per square metre excluding VAT with degressive pricing by quantity. It is the lowest cost way to convert an existing concrete or asphalt area into a marked, free draining multi sport court, and it carries a five year warranty.

Polypropylene behaves differently from rubber. It is light, rigid, dimensionally stable, resistant to ultraviolet light and weather, and it drains through the open structure of the tile rather than across the surface. That combination makes it the standard choice for large outdoor areas where the priority is a hard wearing, low maintenance playing surface rather than deep cushioning.

Installation and site requirements

The tiles clip together mechanically onto an existing hard surface, with no adhesive and no curing time. A crew of two starts from a corner, closes the field across the playing area, then fits edge and corner trims to chamfer the perimeter. On a prepared slab, several hundred square metres can be laid in a day, and the court is playable immediately.

The substrate does the work that the tile cannot. Repair cracks, remove vegetation and correct local depressions before installation, because a modular grid reproduces the profile of what it sits on. Because the tile drains vertically, standing water is rarely a problem, but the slab still needs a fall so that water leaving the joints has somewhere to run.

Maintenance is minimal: sweep debris off the surface and hose it down. In colder climates, clear snow with a plastic blade rather than a steel one. A damaged tile is unclipped and swapped, so keeping a reserve quantity in the original colour batch is worth doing on any public installation.

Where it is specified

School and college playgrounds, municipal multi sport areas, residential and holiday village courts, tennis and padel practice areas, and indoor halls that need a hard wearing sports finish over a concrete slab. The eight colour range lets you define the playing area, the run off zones and the circulation routes visually, which reduces the need for painted markings and their repainting cycle.

Where the court is dedicated to basketball played several hours a day, an elastic rubber tile provides more cushioning. Where sanctioned 3×3 competition is planned, specify a competition approved tile. Where the surface has to attenuate falls from equipment, this is not the right product family: that duty requires a rubber tile tested to EN 1177 for the relevant critical fall height.

Frequently asked questions

How does polypropylene compare with rubber on cost and comfort?

Polypropylene is roughly a third of the price per square metre of an elastic rubber court tile and drains more freely, but it cushions less. On large areas with mixed recreational use, the saving usually outweighs the difference in comfort. On a heavily used basketball court, the rubber tile is the better long term choice.

Is the surface slippery when wet?

The moulded top face is textured for grip and the open structure lets water pass through rather than film across the surface, which is the mechanism that makes smooth slabs dangerous when wet. Keep the joints clear of accumulated debris so that drainage continues to work as intended.

Can an existing painted court be covered?

Yes. Worn paint, faded markings and minor surface damage are all covered by the new tile field, provided the slab itself is sound and even. Overlaying an existing court is normally faster and cheaper than removing it, and it avoids the disposal cost of the old surface.
