Description
FUCUS takes its name and its shape from bladderwrack seaweed. The nets are set out as undulating volumes rather than flat planes, so the structure reads as something growing out of the ground rather than a piece of equipment dropped onto it. On a 10.0 x 9.5 m plan reaching 5.1 m high, that difference is visible from across a park.
Theme as a design tool
Coastal municipalities, seafront campsites and aquarium or visitor-centre grounds increasingly ask for play equipment that carries the story of the place. A themed rope structure does that without the maintenance liability of sculptural cladding: the theme is expressed through the geometry of the net and a small number of HPL panels, both of which are replaceable components rather than bespoke one-offs.
Components
- Reinforced stainless steel structural posts
- An extensive network of nets and cordage across several levels
- Linked raised play platforms
- Installation requiring suitable lifting equipment
Materials
18 mm polyamide rope with a braided galvanised steel core, cut resistant and UV stabilised, joined with aluminium and stainless steel connectors. HPL decorative panels resist weather and impact. Foundations are high-strength concrete at 1.0 m depth.

Frequently asked questions
Is the theme visible from a distance?
Yes. At 5.1 m high with undulating net volumes, FUCUS works as a landmark within a park layout, which is often the reason a client chooses it over a conventional rectangular structure of similar area.
Are the HPL panels replaceable?
They are individual bolted components. Vandalism or accidental damage is dealt with by swapping the affected panel rather than replacing an assembly, which keeps whole-life costs predictable.
What is the difference between FUCUS and CRABE?
Both reach 5.1 m with a 3.0 m free height of fall. CRABE is a narrow 9.5 x 4.4 m unit built for vertical climbing along a line; FUCUS is close to square at 10.0 x 9.5 m and spreads the play across a wider volume.
