Description
SPONGIA is a mid-size marine-themed climbing structure: 7.6 by 6.5 m, 4.0 m high, with tensioned rope nets linking raised platforms on several levels and dedicated climbing and gripping elements. It is a straightforward specification, and this page is written for the person who has to put that specification into a tender document.
What belongs in the specification
- The certificate: EN 1176 conformity issued by an independent certification body, supplied as a document rather than as a claim in a brochure.
- The impact area and free height of fall, here 10.8 by 9.7 m and 2.6 m, so the surfacing package can be specified against the same figures rather than estimated.
- Foundation drawings and depth, here 0.6 m in high-strength concrete, so the groundworks contractor prices the real excavation.
- A parts list with rope, connector and panel references, which is what determines whether the structure can be repaired in ten years or has to be replaced.
- The post-installation inspection and the handover file, which the operator needs before the equipment can be opened to the public.
Materials and construction
Stainless steel structural posts; 18 mm polyamide rope with a braided galvanised steel core, cut-resistant and UV-stable; aluminium and stainless steel connectors; impact and weather resistant HPL decorative panels; high-strength concrete foundations. Stainless steel posts remove the recoating cycle entirely, which is why they are specified rather than painted steel on structures intended to stand for decades.
After handover
Routine visual checks, quarterly functional inspections and an annual main inspection, with records kept for the life of the equipment. Our overview of playground and outdoor fitness inspection sets out what each level covers and who is responsible.

Frequently asked questions
What documents do we receive at handover?
The conformity certificate, the technical file with the installation drawing and foundation details, the maintenance and inspection instructions, and the post-installation inspection report. Those documents are what an operator needs to open the equipment and to defend it at audit.
Can we specify a particular surfacing supplier?
Yes. The equipment specification gives the fall height and the impact area; the surfacing is a separate package and can be tendered independently, provided the tested critical fall height meets or exceeds 2.6 m.
How long are spare parts available?
Rope sections, connectors and HPL panels are catalogue items. Confirm the parts list at order stage and keep it with the site file; it is the document most often missing when a repair is needed years later.
Send us your tender requirements and site plan, and we will return a costed proposal with the full technical and compliance documentation within 24 business hours.
