Description
PALAN is a large structure that stays low. It covers 13.6 by 13.3 m with climbing nets on several faces, raised platforms and a secure access point for young children, yet rises only 3.4 m and holds the free height of fall to 1.0 m. It is the item to specify when a site wants a substantial marine-themed play feature that the whole family can use, without the surfacing specification that usually accompanies a structure of that size.
Scale without exposure
- An impact area of 16.4 by 16.4 m — about 269 m2 — but at a 1.0 m fall height rather than 2.8 m or 3.0 m, which changes the surfacing specification materially.
- Climbing nets on several faces, so a large group approaches from all sides instead of queueing at one entrance.
- A secure access point designed for young children, which is what supports the full 0 to 14 age range on a structure this size.
- Low overall height keeps sightlines open across the play area, so a single supervising adult can watch a wide space.
Where it is specified
Seaside resorts, marinas, waterfront parks and large family campsites, where the marine theme fits the setting and where parents of very different aged children arrive together. Nurseries and inclusive schemes also use it, for the same reason: the structure is large enough to absorb a group, and low enough for an adult to reach any child on it. Related principles are set out in our notes on inclusive playground design.
Materials and construction
Stainless steel structural posts; 18 mm polyamide rope with a braided galvanised steel core, cut-resistant and UV-stable; aluminium and stainless steel connectors; impact and weather resistant HPL decorative panels; high-strength concrete foundations at 0.6 m depth.

Frequently asked questions
Is a stainless steel structure necessary at a coastal site?
It is the sensible specification. Salt air attacks coatings and fixings first; stainless posts with stainless and aluminium connectors remove the recoating cycle that painted steel would require every few years on a seafront.
How much surfacing does it really need?
16.4 by 16.4 m, but tested only for a 1.0 m fall height. Compare that specification with a structure of similar footprint at 2.9 m before comparing equipment prices; the difference in the ground build-up is often the larger figure.
Will older children still use it?
Yes. The nets are what make a climb difficult, not the drop beneath them. What the low height removes is the consequence of a fall, not the challenge.
