Description
CRABE is a long, narrow structure, 9.5 m by only 4.4 m, that puts its play value in the vertical: tensioned nets rise to 5.1 m around a raised platform. Where a site has a linear strip rather than an open square, this shape uses the available land far more efficiently than a conventional square unit of the same play value.
Suited to linear sites
- Riverside and canal-side promenades where the usable strip is shallow
- Verges and buffer strips within residential developments
- Playgrounds bounded on one side by a wall, fence or planting bed
- Extending an existing play area lengthways rather than widening it
The climbing experience
Tall tensioned nets and cordage make the ascent the point of the structure. Climbing and gripping elements are distributed up the height so children build a route rather than following a ladder, and the raised platform gives them a reason to complete it. The 3.0 m free height of fall places CRABE firmly in the older-child bracket within the 3 to 14 approval.
Materials
Stainless steel posts carry 18 mm polyamide rope with a braided galvanised steel core, cut resistant and UV stabilised, assembled with aluminium and stainless steel connectors. Decorative elements are HPL panels. Foundations are high-strength concrete at 1.0 m depth.

Frequently asked questions
How wide does the reserved strip have to be?
7.3 m, against an equipment width of 4.4 m. Along the length, allow 14.0 m for a 9.5 m unit. Those margins are set by the 3.0 m free height of fall and cannot be reduced by moving the unit closer to a boundary.
Is a 5.1 m structure too demanding for younger children?
The approval starts at 3 years, but in practice the lower nets are where younger users play while older children take the full height. If your visitor profile is weighted towards under-fives, the 1.0 m fall height units in the same family are the better match.
Do stainless posts justify their cost?
On exposed, coastal or high-traffic sites they do, because they remove repainting from the maintenance schedule for the life of the structure. Note that stainless steel is used for the posts and connectors; the rope carries a galvanised steel core inside its polyamide sheath.
