Short answer: rubber gym tiles are laid one of two ways — loose-laid (butt-jointed or interlocking, no adhesive; the standard for most gyms, demountable and repairable tile by tile) or bonded with polyurethane adhesive (recommended at perimeters, in high-traffic lanes, on ramps and outdoors, and mandatory in drop zones and under lifting platforms). In both cases, 80 per cent of the outcome is decided by the substrate: clean, dry, sound and flat. Order of operations: flatness check, levelling compound where needed, 24 to 48 hours of acclimatisation in the room, setting out from the centreline, laying, perimeter cutting, then finishing with ramps and thresholds.
The substrate decides the installation
A rubber tile forgives a great deal, but not a bad substrate. Moisture, flatness deviation, thresholds and drummy ceramic tiling all degrade both the finished result and the service life of the floor.
- Flatness — check with a 2 m straightedge. Deviations above roughly 5 mm under the straightedge should be corrected with levelling compound before anything is laid.
- Cleanliness — dust-free and grease-free. Adhesive will not bond through release agent or old floor polish.
- Dryness — this is the one that catches people out. Concrete poured less than two months ago should be treated as wet regardless of how it looks on the surface. It is the leading cause of debonding on adhered floors and the leading cause of trapped moisture on loose-laid ones. Where there is any doubt, test the residual moisture content before ordering adhesive.
- Soundness — no hollow-sounding tiles, no loose screed.
If the room carries an acoustic risk — an upper floor, a party wall with dwellings — the resilient underlay goes in now. It cannot be added afterwards without lifting everything above it. See gym soundproofing and vibration.

Mass works in your favour. A 100 x 100 cm high-density tile at 1,000 kg/m³ weighs about 20 kg at 20 mm and 27 to 32 kg at 40 to 42 mm depending on the underside structure. Once the field is closed, that floor does not move under normal use.
The exception matters. Under an Olympic bar released from the rack, no amount of self-weight is enough. Tiles shift under impact, joints open, and eventually the bar reaches concrete. In drop zones you bond. Full stop. Detail in drop zone flooring.
Step by step
- Acclimatise. Store the tiles flat in the destination room for 24 to 48 hours. Rubber expands and contracts with temperature; laying cold tiles produces joints that open once the heating comes on.
- Set out. Mark the room axes and dry-lay one row in each direction. The objective is to balance the perimeter cuts and avoid strips narrower than half a tile against the walls.
- Lay the field. Work from the centreline outwards, staggered where the format allows, joints closed but not forced. Rubber compresses, and compressed joints retaliate by lifting later.
- Cut. Fresh blade in a heavy-duty knife against a steel straightedge, in several passes, for thicknesses up to 20 to 25 mm. Jigsaw for heavy thicknesses and column cut-outs. Leave a few millimetres of expansion gap at the walls.
- Finish. Chamfered ramps at zone entries for accessibility and trolleys, threshold treatment, and services access (hatches, inspection covers) left as loose-laid tiles so they remain demountable.
Two details that are discovered too late
Machine feet. Heavy equipment — anchored racks and cages, selectorised machines — is best set directly on the concrete slab or on a thin, dense rubber tile, never on a soft build-up: too much cushioning undermines stability. And a threaded adjustable foot concentrates the entire machine load onto a few square centimetres, which permanently indents rubber. A rigid load-spreading plate under each foot solves it for a few euros per machine.
Thickness mapping. The zone-by-zone thickness plan is decided before laying, not after. Retro-fitting a 40 mm drop zone into a 20 mm floor means either a trip hazard or a ramp strip on all four sides. Plan it on the layout drawing. See tile thickness by zone.
DIY or professional installation?
Two competent people with the right tools will lay a simple loose-laid floor without difficulty — one of the format’s advantages over sheet rubber, which is far more demanding to handle and bond. Bring in a professional installer for:
- Large surfaces with multi-zone setting out;
- Fully bonded installations;
- Degraded substrates requiring levelling;
- Public assembly venues with documentary requirements on the fire file;
- Anything involving an acoustic underlay.
Order 5 to 10 per cent extra tiles over the net floor area. Perimeter cuts consume material, and keeping a few tiles from the same batch means a damaged tile can be replaced identically — the single biggest practical advantage of tiles over continuous coverings.

In every case, lay the floor before the machines are delivered. Reversing that order costs more than the floor.
Frequently asked questions
Can rubber tiles be laid over existing ceramic tiling?
Yes in most cases, provided the tiling is clean, dry, sound and flat, with no loose or hollow-sounding tiles. Local defects are corrected with levelling compound. To improve acoustic performance, a resilient underlay can be interposed before the rubber.
Do rubber tiles have to be glued down?
Not everywhere. Loose laying is the standard in gyms, because high-density tiles stay put under their own weight once the field is closed. Polyurethane adhesive is recommended at perimeters, in high-traffic lanes, on ramps, on slopes and outdoors, and it is essential in barbell drop zones, where unbonded tiles shift under impact.
How do you cut a rubber tile?
With a fresh blade against a steel straightedge, in several passes, for thicknesses up to 20 to 25 mm; with a jigsaw for heavy thicknesses and complex cuts around columns. Work over a sacrificial board and change blades often — rubber blunts them quickly.
How many spare tiles should I order?
Five to ten per cent above the net floor area. Perimeter cuts consume tiles, and holding a few from the same production batch allows identical replacement later. Colour batches drift, so matching after two or three years is difficult.
How long does a 200 m² floor take to install?
Two to three working days with two installers for a zoned bonded installation: substrate preparation, laying and cutting, then finishing. Polyurethane adhesive needs cure time before the floor is loaded, which has to sit in the programme. Loose laying is faster and the room is usable immediately.
