Description
The 40 mm training tile is the Light In Fitness reference for weightlifting and barbell drop zones, supplied in a 100 x 100 cm format at 38.50 EUR per square metre excluding VAT. Pressed from recycled SBR granulate at 900 kg/m3, finished with a very fine surface grain and classified Efl for reaction to fire under EN 13501-1, it weighs 32 kg per tile and stays in position without adhesive on a level indoor slab.
Forty millimetres is the point at which a rubber tile stops being a floor protection product and becomes a drop surface. A loaded Olympic barbell released from hip height concentrates its energy on two small contact areas; at 15 or 20 mm that energy reaches the concrete and cracks it, while at 40 mm the tile absorbs the impact and recovers. This is the thickness specified in cross training boxes, strength and conditioning rooms and weightlifting areas.

Installation and zoning
On a level indoor concrete slab the tiles are laid loose, edge to edge, and the 32 kg unit weight keeps the field closed. Cut the perimeter with a utility knife against a straight edge. Work to a substrate tolerance of 5 mm over a 2 m straight edge; the tile is thick enough to bridge minor irregularities but a genuine hollow will still telegraph through under repeated loading. Bonded installation is used outdoors, in wet areas and wherever the surface must not move.
The economical way to use this reference is zone by zone. On a typical strength floor, the 40 mm tile covers the free weight platform and the drop lanes, a thinner tile covers the machine and cardio areas, and a thicker certified tile is bonded under any rig where a user can fall from height. Specifying 40 mm across an entire room is a common way to overspend without gaining anything in the zones that never see a drop.
What it protects
Three things: the concrete slab, the equipment and the building. The slab is protected against cracking and spalling under repeated barbell impacts. Bars, plates and bumpers last longer because the surface absorbs rather than rebounds. Structure borne impact noise is reduced, which matters in shared buildings; where the room sits above another occupied space, add an acoustic underlay beneath the tiles rather than increasing tile thickness further.
Maintenance is limited to sweeping and washing with water and a neutral detergent. The surface is non porous. Keep oils, greases and solvent cleaners away from the rubber, and replace individual tiles rather than whole areas if a spot becomes worn.
Frequently asked questions
Is 40 mm certified for falls from height?
No. This reference is specified for equipment impacts, not for human falls. Where a user can fall from height, from a rig, a playground structure or a raised platform, the surface must be tested to EN 1177 for the relevant critical fall height, which means a thicker certified tile bonded across the impact area.
Do we still need a weightlifting platform?
For general strength training and cross training, the 40 mm tile is the working surface. A dedicated weightlifting platform remains preferable for Olympic lifting at competition volumes, because a rigid central strip gives a more consistent pull. Many facilities combine both: platforms in the lifting bays, 40 mm tiles across the surrounding floor.
