Description
Kordelia is a swing for children with reduced mobility, or for any child who cannot use a conventional seat safely. The moulded polyethylene seat wraps around the body and holds the user in position, so the swinging motion can be enjoyed without the constant effort of staying upright.
A seat that does the holding
Lateral support is what decides whether an inclusive swing is actually used. The wrap-around polyethylene shell contains the user on both sides and behind, which allows a child with limited trunk control to relax into the movement. Because the shell is a single moulding with no fabric or padding, it dries quickly after rain and cannot be picked apart, which matters on an unsupervised public site.

Planning the transfer point
The practical detail that decides success is the transfer: an adult has to move the child from a chair to the seat, at the edge of the safety area, on a firm surface. Allow space for a helper on both sides and specify a continuous impact attenuating surface to EN 1176-1 across the 8.0 x 2.2 m area.
Maintenance
The polyethylene seat is washable and holds no water. Inspection follows the routine, operational and annual regime required by EN 1176, with the seat fixings and chain wear as the priority items.
Frequently asked questions
Does the seat include a harness?
The seat provides containment through its moulded form. Any additional restraint has to be assessed for the individual user by the responsible adult, and the item is specified for supervised use.
How many inclusive seats should a play area have?
One inclusive bay is the usual minimum in a municipal play area. Larger schemes often pair Kordelia with a nest swing, which is usable by a wider range of children without being labelled as special provision.
Is the equipment suitable for a special school?
Yes, and in that setting we would review the age and weight profile of the pupils with you, since a school population differs from the general public the standard age range assumes.
Tell us who will be using the swing and we will specify accordingly. Request a quotation or read our notes on inclusive playground design.
