Description
Portia lets an adult and a small child swing together, facing each other, on a single splayed-leg frame in grade 0H18N9 stainless steel. One side carries a flat seat with a steel insert and an EPDM rubber cover for the adult; the other carries a cradle seat, also EPDM covered, for the child.
Why a face-to-face swing
Very young children get more from a swing when they can see the adult who is with them. The face-to-face arrangement keeps eye contact throughout the movement, which makes it usable from a much earlier age than a conventional bay, and it removes the awkward business of an adult pushing from behind while trying to reassure a nervous toddler. In practice it is the item that keeps parents in the play area rather than on the bench.

Siting
The safety area of 8.0 x 2.2 m runs along the direction of travel, so Portia fits a long, narrow strip better than a square corner. The landing zone must be finished with an impact attenuating surface to EN 1176-1, sized against the 1.8 m free height of fall.
Maintenance
Stainless steel needs no repainting, and the suspension bearings require no lubrication. Inspection concentrates on the EPDM seat covers and the chain condition, within the routine, operational and annual regime required by EN 1176.
