EN ISO 20957 — indoor professional fitness equipment
The reference for all indoor professional training equipment, successor to the old EN 957 series still cited in some legacy tender documents. It defines three usage classes: H (home), S (studio / commercial) and I (institutional, intensive use with access and supervision managed by the operator). Commercial premises require Class S as a minimum, with Class I appropriate for intensive multi-user institutional settings. Two traps: “semi-professional” does not exist in the standard, and the standard does not cover outdoor equipment — EN 16630 takes over there. Key sub-parts: 20957-1 general safety (2024 edition), -2 strength equipment, -4 benches, -5 stationary bikes, -6 treadmills, -7 rowers, -8 steppers, -9 ellipticals, -10 fixed-flywheel cycling bikes.
EN 16630 — permanent outdoor fitness
Applies to every fixed outdoor fitness installation: fitness trails, street workout, outdoor strength stations, calisthenics rigs. It targets users of at least 1.40 m in height (roughly age 13–14 upward) — the boundary that separates it from children’s playgrounds. It requires safety zones of at least 1.5 m around each unit, weather, UV and corrosion resistant materials, documented ground fixing, anti-entrapment design (gaps under 8 mm or over 25 mm), managed fall heights, and permanent marking of manufacturer, year and usage signage. EN 1176 — children’s playgrounds
The sister standard to EN 1177 and the most commonly misplaced boundary in municipal projects: as soon as a module is designed for children, it falls under EN 1176, not EN 16630. It covers design, manufacture, installation, inspection and maintenance, defines the impact areas where attenuating surfacing must be laid, and its part 7 frames the three inspection levels: routine visual, operational and annual main inspection. In several countries — France among them — national regulation makes compliance with EN 1176 and EN 1177 legally mandatory for equipment in collective spaces, not merely good practice. EN 1177 — impact-attenuating surfacing
Applies wherever free fall height exceeds 60 cm. Two notions to keep apart: HIC (Head Injury Criterion), which must stay at or below 1,000 with a gmax of 200 g or less; and critical fall height (CFH), the maximum height at which the tested floor respects those thresholds. The design rule: the floor’s CFH must equal or exceed the equipment’s free fall height. Indicative rubber tile thicknesses: 60 mm for a 2.0 m CFH, 80 mm for 2.5 m, 100 mm and above for 3.0 m; loose materials (wood chips, bark, sand) need 30–40 cm layers. Concrete, asphalt and ceramic tiles are non-compliant under any equipment with fall height.
EN 14904 — indoor multi-sport floors
The standard for sports hall floors (handball, basketball, volleyball), classifying surfaces by shock absorption, vertical deformation, friction and ball behaviour. Do not confuse it with gym flooring: strength and cross-training floors are high-density rubber without EN 14904 requirements — but with a reaction-to-fire requirement in publicly accessible premises (see below). EN 16899 — parkour
Approved in 2016, the only European standard dedicated to parkour and freerunning equipment (blocks, walls, rails, platforms), fixed or movable, aimed at users from age 8. It covers structural resistance, materials, ground fixing, edge-free surfaces, entrapment, maintenance and marking. Parkour is more dynamic than street workout — jumps, vaults, landings — so clearance zones and EN 1177 surfacing become decisive.
EN 15312 — open-access multisport equipment
Applies to multi-use games areas and urban pitches: goals, basketball units, perimeter structures and their anchoring. Its central requirement is goal stability — every goal fixed or ballasted with an anti-tip device, a rule born of serious accidents with unsecured mobile goals. It combines with EN 1177 when fall-height modules are integrated and EN 1176 when a playground adjoins the pitch.

- Name the class, not just the standard: “compliant with EN ISO 20957” says nothing; “compliant with EN ISO 20957-2, Class S” binds the supplier.
- Require proof, not declarations: ISO 17025 accredited laboratory test reports for EN 1177, fire classification reports for EN 13501-1, material certificates for EN 10025.
- Write for the life of the asset: maintenance register, spare-parts availability, inspection periodicity — the clauses that matter at year five.
