Equip Your CrossFit Box: Rigs, Cages and Made-to-Measure Structures

Opening a CrossFit box or a cross-training area is first a structural exercise. The rig has to be sized on the number of athletes training at the same time, the lifting platforms have to be positioned before anything else is placed, and the floor has to be able to absorb dropped barbells day after day. Light In Fitness manufactures these cages to measure and installs them, working from a survey of the actual building — columns, ceiling height and anchoring points included.

Training structures: the backbone of the room

The base of any box is the training structure: rigs, racks and cages. They carry pull-up bars, squat stations, dip bars and every attachment that turns one footprint into several working stations, which is what makes them so efficient in a class format that combines conditioning and strength work. Free-standing rigs suit open floors; wall-mounted structures recover usable space in a narrow room; and a modular rig can be extended later, provided the anchoring and the layout were planned for it from the start.

Our CrossFit rigs and cages are built for continuous class use, and configurations such as the Ziva XP24 professional CrossFit rack show how a single structure can serve several athletes at once.

Sizing the structure around your building

A rig is not chosen from a catalogue page, it is fitted to a room. The parameters that decide the configuration are the ceiling height available under any beam or duct, the position of structural columns, the floor slab and its capacity to take anchors, the circulation needed between stations, and the number of athletes you intend to run through a class simultaneously. Get those wrong and you end up with a structure that is either half unused or impossible to program safely.

This is why we work from a site survey rather than from a floor area alone, and why the structures are made to measure: a box in a converted industrial unit and a hotel functional area do not get the same rig, even when the surface figure matches.

Flooring and safety

The surface you train on is as much a piece of equipment as the rig. A slippery floor is a safety problem, and a floor that cannot absorb a dropped barbell will destroy both the slab and the bar. Professional rubber tiles provide grip, protect the structure of the building and cut the impact noise that otherwise travels through the whole facility — our 40 mm CrossFit rubber tiles are the usual specification under a lifting zone.

Two more safety points that are easy to overlook: anchor the structure to the floor as the manufacturer specifies, and give the rig its own storage so that barbells, plates and accessories are racked rather than left on the training surface. Indoor equipment for a supervised facility falls under EN ISO 20957-1 class S, and the documentation should name that reference.

Pull-up bars: choosing and using them

Pull-up bars are the simplest strength equipment in the room and among the most used. On a rig they come in several lengths and heights, which matters because a class needs several athletes on the bar at once without collisions. They train almost the whole upper body: arms, back, and to a degree the core and chest.

Grip changes the emphasis. A supinated grip — fingers turned towards you — brings the biceps strongly into the movement. A wide pronated grip shifts the work onto the latissimus dorsi. Professional equipment supports effective and safe training, but technique remains the deciding factor, which is why bar height and spacing should be set for coached use rather than copied from a domestic layout.

Building up the configuration over time

Most boxes open with a core structure and extend it as the membership grows. Plan for it: additional storage for dumbbells and plates, a lower bar support, dip bars, plyometric boxes and the accessories that broaden the class programme. Adding to an existing rig is straightforward when the structure and the anchoring were dimensioned for the final configuration and not only for the opening one.

FAQ

How big does the rig need to be?

It follows the number of athletes training simultaneously and the class format, then it is constrained by the room. That is the calculation we run during the survey; the surface of the unit on its own does not answer the question.

Can a rig be installed in a room with low ceilings or columns?

Usually yes, and that is exactly what made-to-measure manufacturing is for. Columns can be integrated into the layout and the height of the pull-up sections adapted, as long as the constraints are recorded before the structure is drawn.

What flooring goes under a lifting zone?

Professional rubber tiles thick enough to absorb dropped loads, laid over a sound slab. Thickness is chosen for the loads actually dropped, and lifting platforms are added where barbells are dropped repeatedly.

Do you install the structure?

Yes. These cages are manufactured to measure and installed, which includes anchoring the structure to the slab in line with the manufacturer requirements.
