Description
PHOBOS takes a different approach from the multi-level pyramids: instead of two or three intermediate nets, it has one platform, set high at 1.8 m. Reaching it is the whole objective, and that single clear goal is what makes a 3 m structure hold the attention of children from five upwards.
Configuration
- Central hot-dip galvanised steel mast, 168.3 mm diameter, 3 m high
- Six main bearing cables anchored to the ground
- Six net walls between the bearing cables
- A single net platform at 1.8 m height
Sizing the installation
The safety area is a 9.0 m diameter circle, 64 square metres. That figure is worth carrying into the cost plan early, because on a neighbourhood playground the surfacing under a pyramid is frequently the item that pushes a scheme over budget. Foundations are cast at 0.8 m depth, and the 168.3 mm mast section reflects the higher cable tensions a single-platform layout produces.
Materials
Hot-dip galvanised steel mast, 168.3 mm diameter. Braided polyamide net reinforced with galvanised steel cables, 18 mm diameter. Plastic and aluminium connectors; stainless steel and painted steel fixings.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the fall height 1.8 m when the mast is 3 m?
Because the platform sits at 1.8 m and that is the highest point from which a user can fall clear. Fall height follows the accessible standing surfaces, not the top of the mast, which is why pyramids of very different heights can share a surfacing specification.
Why does it start at five rather than three?
The single high platform puts the useful part of the structure out of reach for most three-year-olds, and the 1.8 m fall height is above what suits that age. HATI, NIX or MIMAS are the units to consider for younger children.
How does PHOBOS differ from PHOBOS XL?
PHOBOS XL uses the same 168.3 mm mast but stands 4 m, spreads to a 7.5 x 7.5 m base and lifts its single platform to 2.5 m, with a correspondingly larger 10.5 m safety circle.
