Description
KALLIOPE is a vertical climbing net stretched between four hot-dip galvanised posts and pierced by a pass-through opening, so children cross from one face of the net to the other instead of simply climbing up and back down. On a footprint of 3.3 by 3.3 m it delivers a 2.85 m climbing challenge, which makes it a practical answer for school yards, residential courtyards and campsites where ground space is limited but the play value still has to be real.
How children use it
- Ten horizontal and ten vertical ropes form a 3.0 by 3.7 m climbing field with a regular, readable mesh.
- A 0.7 by 0.9 m opening in the panel invites a traverse: children pass through the net, turn and return on the opposite side.
- The double-sided layout keeps two groups busy at once and encourages children to negotiate right of way.
- The challenge is progressive: lower rows suit newly confident climbers, upper rows call for real upper-body strength.
Materials and construction
- Structural posts in hot-dip galvanised steel, 168.3 mm diameter, with a galvanised and powder-coated cap.
- Braided and bonded polyamide rope, 18 mm diameter, built around a six-strand galvanised steel wire core.
- Clamping collars in structural steel protected by chlorinated rubber paint.
- Articulated connections in stainless steel; linking elements in aluminium and technical plastic.
- Reinforced concrete pad foundations, 1.0 m deep.
The steel core inside the rope is what holds the mesh taut season after season and resists cutting; the polyamide sheath is what children actually grip, so the hand feel stays comfortable in cold weather.
Installation and safety area
Allow a clear impact area of 8.3 by 8.3 m around the structure. With a free height of fall of 2.85 m, the ground under and around the net must be an impact-attenuating surface tested for that fall height. Our guide to playground surfacing and fall height sets out how the critical fall height is verified. Foundations are 1.0 m deep reinforced concrete pads and access for heavy plant is required during installation.

Frequently asked questions
Can KALLIOPE be installed over grass?
No. A free height of fall of 2.85 m requires a certified impact-attenuating surface such as loose fill, wet-pour rubber or tested safety tiles. Grass is only accepted below 1.0 m of fall height.
How much maintenance does the rope need?
Routine visual checks look for sheath abrasion and loose clamps; the rope tension is adjusted at the collars during the annual main inspection. Individual rope sections and connectors are replaceable without dismantling the posts.
Is the pass-through opening suitable for younger children?
The equipment is specified from 5 years upwards. Below that age, supervision is essential and a lower climbing module is usually the better choice for the same play area.
