Description
ARIADNE XL spreads the same five pulley-mounted climbing ropes across a 4.24 m post spacing instead of 3.0 m. The ropes are further apart, which changes how the module is used far more than the extra length suggests.
Spacing is the specification
On the standard span, five ropes sit close enough that a climber can reach across from one to another and children interfere with each other when the module is busy. Widening the span to 4.24 m separates the climbing lines, so five children can work in parallel without collisions. That is the reason to choose the XL: it is a throughput decision, taken at design stage, not a difficulty decision.
- Five vertical climbing ropes fitted with pulleys, widely spaced
- Ground anchorage at the base of each rope
- Horizontal support rope between posts spaced 4.24 m apart
- Aluminium, stainless steel and plastic connectors

Where the XL earns its footprint
The extra 1.3 m of safety area length is worth paying for wherever peak use is concentrated: a primary school at break, a campsite in August, a park beside a busy path. On a low-use village site the standard module gives the same play experience for less surfaced area.
Installation and surfacing
Reinforced concrete footings at 1.0 m depth, free height of fall 2.85 m, and an impact attenuating surface to EN 1176-1 over the whole 5.3 x 9.6 m area. Heavy plant access is required for the foundations.
Frequently asked questions
Does the XL take more climbers than the standard version?
Both have five ropes. The XL simply allows all five to be used at the same time without climbers interfering with each other.
Do the pulleys need lubrication?
They are inspected for free movement and secure attachment at the periodic inspection. Any component showing wear is replaced rather than adjusted on site.
Can the module be combined with a rope bridge?
Yes. It shares post and rope specification with the other modules in the collection, so a climbing module and a crossing module can be lined up along one surfaced corridor.
