Description
ARIADNE is a vertical climbing module built from five ropes fitted with pulleys, anchored to the ground at the base and connected at the top to a rope tensioned between two posts 3.0 m apart. The pulleys let each rope shift along the upper rope, so the climb never settles into a fixed line.
Climbing that will not stay still
A fixed climbing rope rewards grip strength. A rope on a pulley rewards something harder to teach: the ability to keep a body organised while the support point migrates. Children discover quickly that pulling hard makes the problem worse, and that a controlled, symmetrical climb works better. For a school this is one of the few outdoor items that produces visible technique improvement over a term.
- Five vertical ropes fitted with climbing pulleys
- Ground anchorage at the base of each rope
- Horizontal support rope at high level between the posts
- Aluminium, stainless steel and plastic connectors

Supervision and use
Because the free height of fall is 2.85 m, the entire safety area needs an impact attenuating surface laid to EN 1176-1. In a school setting the module is normally run with one climber per rope and a clear landing zone kept below, which is also how the operational inspection expects to find it in use.
Maintenance
The pulleys and their attachment points are the moving parts and are checked at each periodic inspection, together with the ground anchors and the sheath condition of the ropes. The galvanised steel posts need no site coating.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the ropes anchored at the bottom?
Ground anchorage keeps the ropes within the designed envelope and stops them being swung outside the safety area. It also gives the climber a stable base to start from.
Is upper body strength essential?
Not for the lower part of the climb, where feet carry most of the load. Children who cannot reach the top still use the module productively, which is why it works across the whole 5 to 14 range.
Can it be installed against a wall or fence?
No. The safety area of 5.3 x 8.3 m must be clear of obstacles on all sides, and the ropes move laterally when in use.
