How to Build a Playground: A Practical Guide for Public Sites

Building a playground is never simply a matter of picking attractive equipment from a catalogue. For a primary school, a municipality, a campsite or a hotel, it is a small construction project with three inseparable components: play structures that comply with the EN 1176 series, impact-absorbing surfacing that complies with EN 1177, and a written maintenance plan. Get those three right and the rest of the project – layout, shade, circulation, budget – falls into place.

Start with the site, not with the catalogue

The first decision is where the playground goes. You need a generous, open area with enough room for the safety zones around every item of equipment, not just for the equipment itself. Free space around a swing set or a rotating unit is part of the installation and cannot be negotiated away later.

Shade matters more than most specifiers expect. Mature trees, a canopy or a shaded seating area keep the space usable through the middle of the day in summer and protect both children and equipment surfaces. Think about sightlines too: supervising adults should be able to see the whole area from a seated position.

Choosing the play structures

A balanced playground mixes sliding, swinging, climbing and quiet play. Slides remain the single most popular item and the easiest to justify. Swings add a calmer, rhythmic form of play. Timber play units bring a natural, visually warm element that works well in parks and campsites. Climbing walls, rope structures and monkey bars develop coordination, grip strength and spatial confidence.

One point of vocabulary that causes real confusion in tenders: children’s play equipment is covered by EN 1176-1, while EN 16630 applies to permanent outdoor fitness equipment for adults. The two standards are not interchangeable, and quoting EN 16630 on a children’s play structure is a specification error.

Surfacing: EN 1177 and free fall height

Impact-absorbing surfacing is the part of the project most often underestimated. Rubber tiles, poured surfacing or loose fill are assessed against EN 1177, and the required thickness depends on the free fall height of each item of equipment above it. A low spring rider and a three-metre climbing tower do not sit on the same build-up.

This means the surfacing specification cannot be written before the equipment is chosen: you work from the highest free fall height in each zone. Our playground surfacing range is selected on exactly that basis.

Anchoring, installation and service life

Every structure has to be anchored so that it is stable and immovable in use. Concrete foundations, ground sockets and anchor kits are specified with the equipment, never improvised on site. Timber components may need weatherproofing or pressure treatment to resist rot and insect attack; galvanised steel and stainless steel need far less attention over the life of the installation.

Maintenance and the inspection register

A playground is an installation with an operator, not a one-off purchase. Routine visual checks, periodic functional inspections and an annual main inspection are all part of normal operation, and the operator must keep a dated register of the inspections carried out. That register is the first document any insurer or inspecting body will ask to see.

Budget for consumables from the outset: rope terminations, bearings, swing seats, fixings and surfacing edges are the parts that wear. Replacing them on schedule is far cheaper than closing a play area.
