The only comparison that helps an equipment buyer is a like for like comparison of published specifications. Brand reputation carries no weight in a tender evaluation grid, and it carries very little weight in a ten year operating budget. This guide sets out how to compare two commercial ranges on the figures that decide daily operation, using Bodytone and Technogym as the worked example: motor rating, running surface, weight stacks, maximum user mass, console and connectivity.
A note on method. The Bodytone figures below come from the manufacturer data sheets and manuals we use daily as a distributor. The Technogym figures come from public documentation consulted at the date of writing. Where a document does not publish a value, we say so rather than estimate it. Specifications change between model years, so ask for the data sheet of the exact reference, with its model year, before you decide.
Why reputation is the wrong first filter
Two catalogue ranges are only comparable if they sit at the same position in their respective catalogues. An entry range from a premium catalogue is not the equivalent of a top range from an accessible catalogue, and comparing them produces a conclusion that says more about pricing strategy than about engineering. Start instead from your own duty of use, then read three lines on each data sheet: the value the machine is rated for, the value your members will actually reach, and whether the manufacturer published the figure at all.
That last point matters more than it looks. In a public tender, an unpublished figure is a figure that does not exist. A cushioning system described as twelve documented points beats a cushioning system described as cushioned, because only one of the two can be verified by the evaluation panel.
Treadmills: which numbers change anything in a club
| Criterion | Bodytone EVOT+ | Technogym Run 600 Excite |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum speed | 20 km/h | up to 27 km/h depending on supply |
| Incline | 0 to 15 per cent | 0 to 18 per cent |
| Motor | AC, 10 hp peak | 5,800 W peak, roughly 8 hp |
| Running surface | 56 x 152 cm | not published in the document consulted |
| Maximum user mass | 150 kg | 220 kg |
| Machine mass | 212 kg | 195 kg |
| Cushioning | 12 point system | cushioned deck, not quantified in the document consulted |
Three Technogym lines are higher: speed, incline and user mass. Whether they are worth paying for depends entirely on whether they will be used. Above 20 km/h you are describing treadmill sprinting, which belongs to a performance centre rather than a commercial cardio floor. If your brief genuinely includes sprint work or very heavy users, the correct answer is to move up within a range rather than to change supplier, which is why we point buyers towards the heavier Nexion series in that case.
The 212 kg machine mass is not a defect. Frame mass is what keeps a deck stable at full speed, and it is one of the few figures that correlates with mechanical longevity rather than with marketing.
Bikes and cross trainers: the console decides retention
On upright bikes the two machines compared here accept the same maximum user mass of 180 kg, and the braking figures (450 W against 500 W) are peak values reached by trained athletes in a maximal sprint. No member on a commercial cardio floor will notice the difference. What they will notice is what sits in front of them for forty minutes: a 21 inch touchscreen running Android, with wireless networking and video inputs, against a console whose options vary by version.
Machine mass again separates them, 77 kg against 61 kg. A heavier bike moves less during out of the saddle efforts, which is a comfort criterion and a durability criterion at the same time.
Cross trainers are the closest call. The Bodytone EVOE+ holds its ground on sensor compatibility and self generating hybrid braking, but it is rated at 135 kg maximum user mass against 180 kg. That is a question of population, not of quality: a general club, a hotel or a local authority site rarely approaches 135 kg, whereas a facility positioned specifically around users living with obesity should move up the range. It is better to say so at quotation stage than after installation.
Selectorised strength: the weight stack sets the useful life
This is where the gap is widest and where buyers underestimate it most often. At comparable footprint and function, the Bodytone Forza Hero machines ship with a 107 kg stack as standard. The Technogym Selection equivalents are published at 65 kg standard, with a 95 kg plus version.
| Criterion | Bodytone FH20 shoulder press | Technogym Selection 900 shoulder press |
|---|---|---|
| Weight stack | 107 kg standard | 65 kg standard, 95 kg plus version |
| Machine mass | 260 kg | 216 kg |
| Footprint | 154 x 149 x 162 cm | approx. 98 x 141 x 149 cm |
| Technology | optional 10 inch screen, NFC, Android | Unity by version, not detailed in the document consulted |
A 65 kg stack caps an advancing member on pressing movements after roughly eighteen months. At that point they move to free weights, or they move to another club. A 107 kg stack as standard covers the whole of a club population without a paid option, a supplementary order or a later upgrade visit. The listed price of a standard stack machine is rarely the price of the machine you will need in two years.
A decision grid you can put in a specification
| Position | Recommendation | Deciding reason |
|---|---|---|
| Selectorised strength | Bodytone Forza Hero | 107 kg standard stack against 65 kg, so progression headroom across the membership term |
| Upright bike | Bodytone EVOU-TS+ | Identical user mass rating, richer console, heavier and therefore steadier frame |
| Treadmill, club use | Bodytone EVOT+ or Nexion range | Quantified cushioning and a published running surface, where the alternative is declarative |
| Treadmill, sprint work or very heavy users | Decide on the written brief | 27 km/h and 220 kg are only worth paying for if they are used |
| Cross trainer, general population | Bodytone EVOE+ | Sensor compatibility and fine resistance control at a very different price position |
| Cross trainer, bariatric positioning | Move up the range | 135 kg user mass can become limiting on that specific brief |
Frequently asked questions
Is Bodytone a professional brand in the same sense as Technogym?
Yes. The ranges compared here fall under class S of ISO 20957-1:2024, which covers professional and commercial use, and they are installed in clubs, hotels and public facilities in daily intensive service. The difference between the two brands is not the professional character of the equipment but price position and the way technical trade offs are distributed. Note that the term semi professional has no standing in the standard: the classes are H for home use, S for professional and commercial use, I for professional inclusive use, alongside accuracy classes A, B and C.
Why does the weight stack matter so much?
Because it sets how long a member can keep progressing on that station. A 65 kg stack caps advanced users on pressing movements in a little over a year, and the cost of the upgrade later almost always exceeds the initial saving.
Is a touchscreen on a cardio machine worth the money?
In a club, it is measurable on average session length. Onboard content weighs more on time spent and return rate than a few dozen extra watts of braking. The effect is stronger still in hotels and workplace gyms, where users are less trained and more sensitive to the experience.
How do I verify a specification before ordering?
Ask for the data sheet of the exact reference, with its model year, plus the declaration of conformity and the stated use class. Commercial names are frequently carried over from one generation to the next while the underlying figures change. The declaration and the use class are the documents that count in a safety review or a public procurement file.
