Advantages of the 25 mm tile
A 25 mm rubber tile is an excellent quality-to-price compromise across a wide range of installations.
- Accessible price. Around 25 to 30 percent cheaper than a 30 mm tile, which matters when the flooring line has to fit a fixed budget.
- Versatility. Suits classic strength training, cardio areas and general fitness floors.
- Easy installation. Moderate weight per tile makes handling, transport and laying quicker.
- Lower build-up. Saves 5 mm of height, which counts in a converted room with a low ceiling or a fixed door threshold.
- Good acoustic performance. Enough for rooms where impact noise is a consideration but not the main constraint.
- Simple upkeep. The surface is less porous than that of thicker tiles.
The 25 mm tile is a good match for hotel fitness rooms, corporate gyms, rehabilitation rooms and community facilities where impact noise matters but high-impact drops are not part of the programme.

A 30 mm rubber tile delivers higher performance where the use is intensive.
- Greater absorption. More protection under heavy loads and explosive movements.
- Stronger acoustic performance. A reduction of 20 to 25 dB, which is what a professional floor above an occupied space needs.
- Longer service life. Better resistance to intensive wear, at 12 to 15 years.

- Slab protection. Helps avoid cracking and permanent marking of the concrete underneath.
One important limit on both thicknesses
Neither 25 mm nor 30 mm is the right answer under a dedicated barbell drop zone. A platform area where loaded bars are dropped from height needs 40 mm or more, which is what our 40 mm CrossFit rubber tile is built for. Specify 30 mm for a heavy strength floor by all means, but do not use it as a substitute for a proper drop zone build-up: the tile compresses, the slab underneath takes the energy, and you end up relaying the zone.
The practical approach in a mixed facility is to zone the floor. Machine and cardio areas take the 25 mm tile, heavy strength areas take 30 mm, and the platform and drop zones take 40 mm or more, with transition ramps where the levels change.
When to choose which: a practical guide
Choose the 25 mm tile if:
- You are fitting out a light-duty room such as a hotel, corporate or rehabilitation gym
- The budget is constrained
- The programme does not include barbell drops
- The floor is mainly cardio and light to moderate strength work
- Available height is limited
Choose the 30 mm tile if:
- You run heavy strength training
- You are fitting out a professional floor
- You need the highest impact sound reduction the tile format can give
- Your equipment is very heavy, above 500 kg per m2
- You are specifying for maximum durability
Where the use is uncertain, the 30 mm tile is the safer choice, because it leaves margin for the way the programme may develop. Where the use includes dropping loaded bars, neither is enough and you should be specifying 40 mm or more from the start.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 5 mm difference really significant?
Yes. 5 mm is a 20 percent difference in thickness. In practice that means better shock absorption, higher impact sound reduction and a longer service life.
Can I mix 25 mm and 30 mm tiles in the same room?
It is possible but not advisable. The level difference creates a trip hazard. If you have to do it, use transition ramps at every change of level.
Are 30 mm tiles too thick for a small room?
No, they simply give more protection. The only constraint is to check that the finished floor level still leaves comfortable headroom and that doors still clear the surface.
How much do I save with 25 mm tiles?
On average 10 to 15 EUR per m2. For a 30 m2 room that is a saving of 300 to 450 EUR.
Is density the same at 25 mm and 30 mm?
Not necessarily, and this is where most specifications go wrong. Always check the figures. A high-density 25 mm tile at 950 kg per m3 can outperform a low-density 30 mm tile at 700 kg per m3. Thickness alone tells you very little without the density that goes with it.
