Power Rack: Complete Buying Guide and Comparison 2026

Looking for the right power rack for your strength area or your box? This guide covers what you need to know to choose one: the selection criteria, a comparison of the rack types, and the installation questions that come up once the equipment is on site.

What a power rack is, and why every strength floor has one

The power rack, or squat cage, is the central piece of equipment in any serious strength area. The structure gives you:

  • Maximum safety: the safety bars let a lifter train alone with confidence.
  • Versatility: squat, bench press, pull-ups, rows and dozens of other exercises.
  • Expandability: attachments can be added later, including pulleys, a dip station and a landmine.
  • Durability: a quality model is a 15 to 20 year investment.

Unlike a smith machine, a power rack is used with free weights, which recruits the stabilising muscles more strongly and allows a natural range of motion.

The criteria that decide the choice

1. Load capacity

Capacity has to match the level of the users and what the station is for:

  • Beginner to intermediate: 300 to 500 kg is sufficient.
  • Advanced and competitive lifters: 600 to 800 kg.
  • Commercial and intensive use: 1000 kg and above.

2. Dimensions and footprint

  • Height: 200 cm minimum, ideally 210 to 220 cm.
  • Internal width: 100 to 120 cm for a comfortable range of movement.
  • Depth: 120 to 150 cm to squat and bench inside the frame.

3. Upright section

  • 60 x 60 mm: light-duty, adequate for occasional use.
  • 75 x 75 mm: the professional standard.
  • 80 x 80 mm and above: intensive use and heavy attachments.

4. Hole spacing (Westside spacing)

The spacing of the holes determines how precisely the bar and the safeties can be positioned:

  • 50 mm: the standard, and adequate for most uses.
  • 25 mm through the bench range (Westside): the better option for pressing, where a centimetre changes the set-up.

Comparing the rack types

Rack categories differ by frame section, capacity and how much they can be expanded rather than by badge:

  • Light-duty racks: 60 x 60 mm uprights, capacity around 300 to 400 kg, limited attachment options. Suitable for low-traffic or occasional-use areas.
  • Standard racks: 75 x 75 mm or 80 x 80 mm uprights, capacity around 500 to 700 kg, compatible with a wide range of attachments. The usual answer for a regularly used strength area.
  • Professional racks: 80 x 80 mm uprights as a minimum, capacity in the 800 to 1200 kg range, Westside spacing and the option of integrated pulleys. This is the specification for commercial facilities and powerlifting.
  • Half racks and combo racks: more compact, with no rear uprights. Less versatile, but enough for squat and bench where floor space is the constraint.

Our squat racks and power racks cover these formats, and where two lifters need to train side by side, the double power racks put two stations on one frame.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a power rack and a smith machine?

A power rack is used with free weights and an olympic barbell, which recruits the stabilising muscles more. A smith machine guides the bar on rails, which gives more safety but less natural muscle activation.

Does the rack need to be bolted to the floor?

For intensive use or heavy loads, yes. Many models with a wide base can be used unfixed for moderate use, but on a commercial floor bolting down is the default.

What ceiling height is needed?

Allow at least 240 cm for a standard 210 cm rack if pull-ups are to be performed on it. For compact models of 180 to 190 cm, 220 cm is enough.

Are power racks noisy?

The rack itself is silent. The noise comes from weights dropping onto the safety bars. Rubber gym flooring tiles reduce the noise and protect the slab underneath.

How long does a power rack last?

A quality frame is a 15 to 20 year asset. What ages first is the attachments and the wear parts, not the uprights, which is why attachment availability matters at purchase.

Choosing the right rack

Whether you are equipping a commercial strength area, a box or a club, the criteria stay the same: a load capacity matched to the users, dimensions compatible with the space and the ceiling, and build quality that survives daily traffic. Equipment for supervised facilities open to the public is built to EN ISO 20957-1 class S. Complete the installation with rubber flooring to protect the floor and control the noise, and plan the attachments at the same time as the frame rather than a year later. Request a quote and our team will specify the rack, the attachments and the flooring for your site.
