Description

MEGAJUMBO is a spherical rope structure of eleven steel arches, 10.2 by 10.0 m and 5.5 m high, containing more than 1200 m of rope arranged over two internal storeys. The sphere is entered by two climbing accesses, at the front and at the rear, which keeps the flow of children moving through the volume instead of queuing at one point.

The eleven arches are assembled on a radius of about 3.2 m and are hot dip galvanised steel tube of 168.3 mm diameter with an epoxy paint finish. Inside, the spatial rope network is organised on two levels linked by ropes and ladders, and a rope veil extends beyond the contour of the sphere. Ropes are braided and bonded polyamide of 18 mm diameter, with fittings in aluminium, stainless steel and engineering plastics on reinforced concrete foundations.

Specifying a landmark rope sphere

A sphere of this size is chosen as the centrepiece of a park or a large residential scheme. Its free height of fall of 2.3 m is lower than that of a comparable pyramid, which usually reduces the thickness or the grade of impact attenuating surfacing needed over the 13.5 m diameter clear area, and that has a direct effect on the surfacing budget.

The options list matters at design stage rather than afterwards: slides in single, double, triple or wide format, a fireman pole and decorative climbing accesses are integrated into the sphere at manufacture. Decide them with the implantation drawing, because each exit adds its own impact area.

Frequently asked questions

How much clear space does the sphere need?

A circular area of 13.5 m diameter, surfaced to EN 1177 for a free height of fall of 2.3 m.

Can slides be added?

Yes. Single, double, triple and wide slides are available as options, as is a fireman pole. Specify them with the quotation so the impact areas are drawn correctly.

What protects the steel arches?

Hot dip galvanising with an epoxy paint finish, a combination suited to permanent outdoor installation in public play areas.
