Description
KLIO is a twisted rope bridge: three horizontal ropes, two of them main ropes held apart by a steel spacer, joined by eight vertical linking ropes across a 3.0 m span. The vertical links twist the assembly so the crossing rotates slightly as it is used.
A crossing that rotates
The twist is what makes this module different from a straight rope bridge. Weight applied at one point turns the section, so a child has to counter a rotation as well as a swing. It teaches a genuinely useful piece of body control, and it produces the running commentary between children waiting their turn that tells you a module is working.
- Three horizontal ropes, two of them main ropes
- Galvanised steel spacer separating the main ropes
- Eight vertical linking ropes

Where it sits in a trail
KLIO is more demanding than the V-section walkway and less demanding than the free-hanging rope crossings, which makes it a natural middle module. Its safety area is the standard 5.3 x 8.3 m, so it drops into a linear trail without changing the surfaced strip width.
Maintenance
Rotation concentrates wear at the connections between the vertical links and the main ropes. Those points, plus rope tension and the spacer fixings, are the items recorded under the routine, operational and annual inspection regime required by EN 1176.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the bridge rotate?
Enough to be felt and countered, not enough to invert. The geometry is fixed by the spacer and the tensioned main ropes and is part of the certified configuration.
Is it suitable for a school playground?
Yes, and it is usually run one child at a time in supervised settings because of the way the section moves under load.
What is the difference from KLIO XL?
KLIO XL uses ten vertical links across a 4.24 m span and needs a wider safety area of 6.5 x 9.6 m.
