Description
SCYLLA is a suspended rope tunnel between 0.8 m and 1.2 m in diameter, given its shape by two hot-dip galvanised steel rings, strung between posts 3.0 m apart. Children crawl through it rather than over it.
Enclosure as play value
Almost every other module in a rope trail is open. A tunnel is enclosed, and that changes who uses it: children who will not attempt an exposed crossing will go through a tunnel, because the structure is around them rather than under them. The varying diameter means the passage narrows and widens along its length, so progress is by wriggling and pushing rather than simple crawling.
- Rope tunnel, 0.8 m to 1.2 m in diameter
- Two hot-dip galvanised steel shaping rings
- Fixing clamps protected with chlorinated rubber paint

Access and supervision
A tunnel hides its occupants, which supervisors should know before it is installed. In practice the 3.0 m length is short enough to see through from either end, and the open rope construction means a child inside is always visible from outside, unlike a solid tube.
Installation and surfacing
Foundations are 1.0 m deep reinforced concrete footings requiring heavy plant access, and impact attenuating surfacing to EN 1176-1 covers the full 5.3 x 8.3 m safety area against a free height of fall of 2.85 m.
Who specifies a rope tunnel
Primary schools and municipal parks buy this module for the children who hang back. A tunnel is the least exposed piece of equipment in a rope trail, so it draws in users who will not attempt an open crossing, and it gives them a route into the rest of the installation rather than leaving them at the edge of it.
Frequently asked questions
Can a child get stuck in the tunnel?
Opening sizes and entrapment risks are assessed as part of the certification to EN 1176-1 by an independent body. The tunnel must not be modified or re-tied on site.
Do children climb on top of it?
They do, and the module is certified with that use accounted for in the free height of fall and the safety area.
Is the XL version longer or wider?
Longer. SCYLLA XL spans 4.24 m between posts, with a safety area of 5.3 x 9.6 m.
