  • Plate-Loaded or Selectorised Machines for a Family Club: the 60/40 Rule

Plate-Loaded or Selectorised Machines for a Family Club: the 60/40 Rule

by Michaël Galy / Monday, 04 May 2026 / Published in Guides Acheteurs

For a family-oriented, mixed-membership club, the ratio that works is 60 to 70 percent selectorised (weight-stack) machines and 30 to 40 percent plate-loaded machines. Selectorised units keep beginners safe, speed up peak-hour rotation and minimise maintenance; plate-loaded units give experienced members progression, a free-weight feel and exercise versatility. On a 100 m2 strength floor that typically means six to eight selectorised machines and three to four plate-loaded ones, at indicative budgets of 2,500 to 5,000 EUR excluding VAT per selectorised unit and 1,800 to 3,500 EUR excluding VAT per plate-loaded unit depending on range.

This is one of the most structural decisions in a strength fleet. Go all-selectorised and the floor feels safe but limited to experienced lifters. Go all-plate-loaded and you build a functional-training box that excludes half of a family club’s beginner clientele. Across the mixed-membership clubs we have equipped since 2013, the 60/40 to 70/30 balance is the one that maximises satisfaction across all member profiles. For the mechanical differences between the two systems, see our primer on selectorised vs plate-loaded machines; this article focuses on how a family club should apply them.

The two systems in brief

  • Selectorised (60-70% of the fleet): resistance is built into the machine as a stack of plates, adjusted with a pin in seconds. Maximum safety (no weights to handle or drop), fast adjustment, fine 2.5-5 kg increments for every level, simple maintenance (pulleys, cables, straps). Downsides: a larger footprint, roughly 30 percent higher purchase price, and a feel that advanced lifters find less authentic.
  • Plate-loaded (30-40% of the fleet): the user loads Olympic plates onto dedicated horns. Free-weight feel, more compact footprint, lower purchase price, and genuine versatility on some models. Downsides: plates left on machines, slower load changes, and more demanding upkeep of pads and straps.

Seven decision criteria compared

Criterion Selectorised Plate-loaded Advantage
Beginner safety Very high (enclosed stack) Moderate (plate handling) Selectorised
Adjustment speed 5 seconds (pin) 20-40 seconds (loading) Selectorised
Peak-hour rotation Excellent Moderate (queues for plates) Selectorised
Feel for experienced lifters Good Excellent (free-weight sensation) Plate-loaded
Floor footprint 3-5 m2 per station 2-3 m2 per station Plate-loaded
Purchase cost (excluding VAT) 2,500-5,000 EUR per station 1,800-3,500 EUR per station Plate-loaded
Annual maintenance cost ~50-100 EUR per station ~100-200 EUR per station Selectorised

Worked example: a 100 m2 family-club floor

Applied to a versatile 100 m2 strength floor serving 150 to 250 active members:

Station Quantity Recommended system
Iso-lateral chest press 1 Selectorised
Lat pulldown 1 Selectorised
Horizontal row 1 Plate-loaded acceptable
Leg extension 1 Selectorised
Lying leg curl 1 Selectorised
Leg press / hack squat 1 Plate-loaded (heavy loads possible)
Shoulder press 1 Selectorised
Hip abductor / adductor 1 Selectorised
Pec deck 1 Selectorised
Olympic hip thrust 1 Plate-loaded (glute zone essential)
Plate-loaded squat 1 Plate-loaded

That gives seven selectorised and four plate-loaded machines across eleven stations, a 64/36 ratio, squarely within the 60-70/30-40 rule for a family club. For sizing the ratio on other floor formats, see our guide to the selectorised and plate-loaded floor ratio.

Adjusting the ratio to your target market

Facility type Recommended ratio Rationale
Family-oriented club 60-70% selectorised / 30-40% plate Beginner safety plus progression for regulars
Premium urban club 50/50 More experienced clientele, performance expectations
Functional training box 10-20% selectorised / 80-90% plate Free weights dominate
Women-focused / glute-focused club 50/50 with dedicated hip thrust Safety, progression and a strong glute zone
Hotel gym 80-100% selectorised Unsupervised use, total safety
Care home / senior residence 100% selectorised, reduced loads Absolute safety and accessibility
Workplace wellbeing gym 80-90% selectorised No coach on site, varied profiles
Military base 10-30% selectorised / 70-90% plate Extreme robustness, heavy loads

The classic mistake in a family club is over-weighting plate-loaded because it is cheaper to buy. The 30 percent saving on capital expenditure reverses within 12 to 18 months: beginners feel out of place, first-year drop-out rises and renewal rates fall. Target the 60-70/30-40 ratio from day one; it is what secures the club’s long-term profitability.

Which stations deserve to be plate-loaded

Spend the plate-loaded share where the free-weight feel genuinely adds value:

  • Leg press / hack squat: heavy-load work up to 200-300 kg, where plate loading feels most natural
  • Olympic hip thrust: the signature glute-zone exercise; see our hip thrust machine buying guide
  • Plate-loaded squat: an alternative to the classic rack with easy progressive loading
  • Horizontal row: authentic pulling feel and exercise versatility
  • Converging chest press: free-press sensation in a compact footprint

Isolation stations (leg curl, leg extension, abductors, guided shoulder press) are better kept selectorised for speed and safety. Note also that plate-loaded machines need their own Olympic plates: plan four to six discs of each weight per station, rubber-coated, on a nearby rack, an additional 2,000 to 4,000 EUR excluding VAT for a four-machine set-up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the practical difference between the two systems?

On a selectorised machine, the load is built in as a weight stack adjusted with a pin; the user never handles a weight. On a plate-loaded machine, the user loads Olympic plates onto the machine. Most balanced clubs use both, assigned station by station.

Is plate-loaded really cheaper to buy?

Yes, typically 25 to 35 percent cheaper per equivalent station: roughly 1,800-3,500 EUR excluding VAT versus 2,500-5,000 EUR excluding VAT for a selectorised equivalent. But purchase price is only part of the equation; plate-loaded maintenance tends to cost more over the fleet’s life, and the plates themselves are an extra line in the budget.

Can a plate-loaded machine replace true free weights?

Only partly. It reproduces the loading ritual but remains guided; it does not equal a free squat or bench press. Combine plate-loaded stations with a genuine free-weights zone (rack, Smith machine, adjustable benches, dumbbell set). The two are complementary, not interchangeable.

What ratio suits a premium club rather than a family club?

For a premium urban club with a more experienced clientele, move to 50/50, or even 40/60 for a performance-led positioning. The family-club logic of protecting beginners matters less there than the perceived quality of the training feel.

Can two brands be mixed on one floor?

Yes. A common pattern is a versatile mid-range line for most stations and a premium line on the most visible machines, with visual coherence checked on the 3D layout before ordering.
