Flooring is the decision most often made last in a gym fit-out and the one that causes the most expensive regrets. Thickness is at the centre of it: too thin and the floor bottoms out under dropped weights, transmits noise to the floor below and needs replacing within a couple of years; too thick and you have paid for shock absorption an aerobics room will never use, raised the floor level at every doorway and made machines less stable. This guide sets out how to arrive at the right thickness for each zone of a facility rather than picking one number for the whole building.
Start from the activity, not from the thickness
There is no single correct thickness for a gym, because a gym is rarely one activity. A weightlifting platform area, a machine floor, a group exercise studio and a reception corridor all have different requirements, and specifying a single product across all of them means overpaying in three of the four. The practical method is to divide the plan into zones, define what happens in each, then select a thickness per zone.
The question that governs the choice is what hits the floor and from what height. A dropped loaded barbell is a different problem from a member landing from a box jump, which is different again from a treadmill running for twelve hours a day. Impact energy, not floor area, sets the specification.
The three material families
Rubber tiles
Rubber is the default choice for commercial gym floors, and for good reason. It absorbs impact effectively, it resists the abrasion of equipment being dragged across it, and it is available across a wide range of thicknesses so that one material can serve several zones with different specifications. It is also the only one of the three families that reliably survives dropped weights. Foam and puzzle tiles
Foam tiles are lighter, warmer underfoot and quick to lay, which makes them a reasonable choice for yoga, pilates and low-impact studio work, and for spaces whose layout changes. Their limitation is durability: in a high-traffic area or anywhere weights are handled they compress and tear far sooner than rubber, so the lower purchase price is often spent again within a few seasons. Specify them where the loading genuinely is light, not as a cheaper substitute where it is not.
PVC and polypropylene tiles
Synthetic tiles are hard-wearing, easy to clean and available in a wide range of colours and patterns, which makes them the usual choice where the floor is part of the visual identity of the space or where a court marking is needed. Polypropylene interlocking tiles are the common solution for multi-sport and court surfaces. They resist equipment wear well but they do not provide the shock absorption of rubber, so they belong in circulation, court and functional zones rather than under a drop area.
Thickness by zone
The figures below are the ranges most commonly specified for indoor commercial use. Treat them as a starting point for a plan, not as a substitute for the datasheet of the product you finally choose.

What else decides the thickness
How hard the room is used
A room used all day by a full membership wears its floor faster than the same room used for a few classes a week, and the wear shows first as compaction rather than as visible damage. Facilities with long opening hours generally specify at the upper end of the range for their zone, because the practical cost of replacing a floor is not the tiles but the days of closure.
The subfloor you are laying on
The condition of the slab underneath matters as much as the tile on top. An uneven subfloor creates pressure points that shorten the life of the covering and can be felt underfoot. Check level and flatness before ordering, because a thicker tile does not correct an uneven base; it just hides it until it fails.
Budget across the life of the floor
Thicker tiles cost more to buy and more to lay. That extra cost is worth comparing against the replacement cycle rather than against the initial quote alone, because the cheaper floor in a heavily used room is usually the one that gets bought twice. The comparison to run is cost per year of service, including the closure days each replacement costs you.
Acoustics: the problem that arrives after opening
Noise transmission is the complaint that reaches a gym operator from the neighbours, the tenants below or the offices next door, and it is far cheaper to design out than to retrofit. Thicker rubber reduces the transmission of impact noise, and where the gym sits above an occupied floor a dedicated acoustic underlay beneath the tile does more than adding thickness on its own. If your building has residential or office space below, treat this as part of the flooring specification from the start rather than as a later fix.
Installation
Prepare before you lay. Check that the subfloor is level and sound, clean it thoroughly so nothing is trapped under the covering, and use a primer where the base is porous or very smooth. Set out the area properly rather than starting from one corner and hoping, because a small alignment error accumulates across a room and shows up as a visible drift in the joints.
Follow the manufacturer’s conditions for temperature and humidity during laying; rubber tiles in particular are usually specified to be laid above a minimum ambient temperature. Use a rubber mallet to seat tiles without damaging the edges, and respect any curing or settling time given before the space is used. Maintenance
Regular cleaning is what keeps a sports floor performing and safe. Sweep or vacuum daily to remove grit, which is what actually abrades the surface, and use gentle methods rather than aggressive chemicals. A pH-neutral cleaner is the usual recommendation for PVC surfaces. Inspect the joints between tiles periodically and close any gaps, because water finding its way underneath is how a floor fails from below.
Build the inspection into an existing routine rather than treating it as a separate task. A five-minute walk of the floor each week catches lifting edges and worn tiles while they are still a repair rather than a replacement.
FAQ
Can we use one thickness across the whole gym?
You can, and some small facilities do for simplicity, but it means specifying to the most demanding zone everywhere. In most layouts zoning the floor is cheaper and performs better.
Does a thicker tile always mean better shock absorption?
Not on its own. Thickness matters, but so do the density and the composition of the tile. Two 30 mm tiles from different products can behave very differently, which is why the datasheet matters more than the number of millimetres.
What about fire performance?
Flooring in a facility open to the public is subject to reaction-to-fire requirements, and the class required depends on the building and its use. Ask for the classification of the specific product and check it against what your building requires; do not assume it from the material.
Do machines need the same floor as free weights?
No. Machines apply a continuous static load and very little impact, so a thinner tile normally suffices, provided it is dense enough not to indent under machine feet.
Rolls or tiles?
Tiles are easier to lay, easier to replace one at a time and better suited to zoned layouts. Rubber flooring rolls give fewer joints across a large open area. The choice usually follows the room shape and how likely you are to reconfigure it.
