Which is better, the front squat or the back squat? The honest answer to a debate that has run for decades is that it depends on the client in front of you. For a coach programming for a mixed membership, or for an operator deciding how many rack positions to install, the useful question is not which lift wins but which one a given member can perform well today.
Both variants demand hip flexion, knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion through the eccentric phase, then hip extension, knee extension and plantar flexion through the concentric phase. The joint actions are the same. What changes is where the bar sits, and everything that follows from that.
Muscles worked in the front squat and the back squat
Front squats and back squats recruit the same muscle groups. The prime movers are the glutes and the quadriceps; the hamstrings act as synergists; and the deep abdominal musculature, the transversus abdominis in particular, works as a stabiliser.
EMG activity in each of those groups, quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes, is close to identical between the two lifts. Because the position of the bar shifts the centre of mass, the two variants do not load the spinal extensors in the same way, and the more upright torso of the front squat is precisely why it is often selected when trunk position is the limiting factor. Back squats also generate greater compressive, downward, forces at the knee. Shear forces across the knee, side to side, are the same in both lifts, and very small in each.
The real difference is upper-body mechanics
The decisive difference between the two lifts is not in the legs at all. It is in the shoulders and the thoracic spine.
Clients who lack external rotation at the shoulder struggle with the back squat. They cannot hold the bar in the correct position across the upper back because shoulder and thoracic mobility will not allow it. These are typically clients presenting upper crossed syndrome, rounded shoulders and a forward head position, which is what you see in members who spend their days driving or working at a computer. In a corporate or municipal facility that is a large share of the membership.
The front squat requires no external rotation at the glenohumeral joint, which is what makes it the workable option for that population. It has its own limit, however: some clients find the bar position across the front of the shoulders uncomfortable, especially where there is acromioclavicular joint dysfunction.
Loading, safety and what the evidence supports
There is anecdotal evidence that front squats are gentler on a client lower back, but this has not been definitively established by research, and it should not be presented to members as settled fact. What is consistently observed is the other side of the trade: clients tend to be able to lift heavier loads in the back squat.
Ultimately both exercises target the lower-limb musculature and both are useful for developing muscle growth, strength and power. The one you programme should follow from the client squat posture, their technique and their preference. You are unlikely to see a meaningful performance difference from choosing one lift over the other. Training is cumulative, and adherence usually matters more than variant selection.
What this means for the rack area
Programming both variants across a mixed membership has a direct equipment consequence: you need adjustable j-cup heights that suit a front rack position as well as a back rack position, and you need enough rack positions that a coached client is not queuing behind a heavy back-squat set.

Why can a member back squat more than they front squat?
Clients generally handle heavier loads in the back squat. That is a mechanical consequence of bar position, not a sign that the front squat is less effective, since EMG activity in the quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes is close to identical between the two.
What should a coach look at before choosing a variant?
Shoulder external rotation and thoracic mobility first, because they decide whether a back squat is even available. Then acromioclavicular comfort, which decides whether the front rack position is tolerable. Then the client own preference, because that is what drives consistency.
