1. A heavy, self-supporting frame
A rig designed to work without anchors needs enough self-weight not to tip or slide under load. The specification points that matter:
- Steel box sections of at least 80 x 80 mm (versus 60 x 60 mm on a standard anchored rig)
- Minimum wall thickness of 3 mm
- Widened base plates (cross- or T-shaped feet with a footprint of at least 60 x 60 cm)
- A frame self-weight of 400 to 800 kg depending on configuration

Timber weightlifting platforms (50-70 kg/m2) placed at the foot of the rig can act as a structural counterweight when they are tied to the rig’s base plates with stainless steel angle brackets. This typically adds another 200-400 kg of effective stability and also improves the acoustics of controlled drops. Pair the platforms with appropriate weightlifting drop zone flooring to protect the slab itself.

Four checks to run before ordering
- Check the floor’s load capacity. A 800 kg rig plus 400 kg of ballast plus four simultaneous users can easily reach 1,800-2,000 kg over 6-8 m2, or 250-300 kg/m2. Upper-storey slabs are commonly rated at 200-400 kg/m2 depending on the era of construction. Anywhere above ground level, commission a structural engineer’s calculation before ordering.
- Check the floor surface. A freestanding rig needs a flat (within 5 mm over 2 m) and stable base: no carpet, no unweighted floating floor. Self-levelling screed may be required first.
- Check building consents. Even without drilling, operating a training facility in a mixed-use building usually requires formal consent covering noise, opening hours and commercial use. Secure it before signing the lease.
