How to Install a Freestanding CrossFit Rig Without Drilling the Concrete Slab

Yes, a freestanding CrossFit rig can be installed securely without drilling a single hole in the concrete slab, provided three principles are combined: a heavy self-supporting frame (400 to 800 kg of reinforced steel), internal ballast made up of Olympic plates (200 to 400 kg distributed over the base plates), and heavy weightlifting platforms (50-70 kg/m2 of cross-laminated timber) acting as a counterweight. That combination delivers the stability needed for kipping pull-ups and muscle-ups by users up to 100 kg. For repeated weightlifting drops at 150-200 kg, mechanical anchoring remains safer, and a wall-mounted rig or a renegotiated lease is the better route.

Why drilling is often forbidden in the first place

Many functional training and CrossFit projects stall at the pre-lease stage over a single clause: no drilling into the concrete slab. The restriction usually comes from one of three situations:

  • Standard commercial leases: most recent leases prohibit any alteration to the building’s structure without the landlord’s written consent, and chemical anchoring into a slab legally counts as a structural alteration.
  • Multi-occupancy buildings: the slab between floors is common property. Drilling requires formal consent from the building’s owners or management body, a process that can take months and may never succeed.
  • Older or historic buildings: slabs can be thin, built with hollow clay-pot systems that cannot take anchors, or lack the reinforcement needed to absorb the stresses of chemical fixings.

In all three cases, a ballasted freestanding rig is the way to open a functional training facility without giving up pull-ups, muscle-ups and dynamic gymnastic work.

The three principles of a stable freestanding rig

1. A heavy, self-supporting frame

A rig designed to work without anchors needs enough self-weight not to tip or slide under load. The specification points that matter:

  • Steel box sections of at least 80 x 80 mm (versus 60 x 60 mm on a standard anchored rig)
  • Minimum wall thickness of 3 mm
  • Widened base plates (cross- or T-shaped feet with a footprint of at least 60 x 60 cm)
  • A frame self-weight of 400 to 800 kg depending on configuration

By comparison, a standard anchored rig typically weighs 200-300 kg. The freestanding version weighs two to three times more, which shows in the price: expect a premium of 30 to 60 percent over a wall-mounted rig. 2. Internal ballast using Olympic plates

The widened base plates carry posts sized to receive 20 kg Olympic plates. Typical ballast loads:

  • 2-upright rig: 100-200 kg of ballast (5-10 plates of 20 kg)
  • 4-upright rig: 200-400 kg of ballast (10-20 plates)
  • 6-upright rig: 400-600 kg of ballast (20-30 plates)

Ballast is fitted in about 30 minutes at commissioning and can be removed for relocation or reconfiguration, which is the single biggest advantage of a freestanding rig over an anchored one. The plates are not dead money either: they remain usable for day-to-day barbell work.

3. Weightlifting platforms as a structural counterweight

Timber weightlifting platforms (50-70 kg/m2) placed at the foot of the rig can act as a structural counterweight when they are tied to the rig’s base plates with stainless steel angle brackets. This typically adds another 200-400 kg of effective stability and also improves the acoustics of controlled drops. Pair the platforms with appropriate weightlifting drop zone flooring to protect the slab itself.

A ballasted freestanding rig is a remarkable answer for around 90 percent of standard functional training use. It has physical limits, though. For a facility dedicated to pure weightlifting, with 200 kg squats, 250 kg deadlifts and repeated clean-and-jerk drops, no amount of ballast will match the safety of an anchored structure. In that case, renegotiate the lease (drilling in exchange for a guaranteed reinstatement at exit) or look for different premises. Four checks to run before ordering

  1. Check the floor’s load capacity. A 800 kg rig plus 400 kg of ballast plus four simultaneous users can easily reach 1,800-2,000 kg over 6-8 m2, or 250-300 kg/m2. Upper-storey slabs are commonly rated at 200-400 kg/m2 depending on the era of construction. Anywhere above ground level, commission a structural engineer’s calculation before ordering.
  2. Check the floor surface. A freestanding rig needs a flat (within 5 mm over 2 m) and stable base: no carpet, no unweighted floating floor. Self-levelling screed may be required first.
  3. Check building consents. Even without drilling, operating a training facility in a mixed-use building usually requires formal consent covering noise, opening hours and commercial use. Secure it before signing the lease.
  4. Document the arrangement in the lease. Add a clause covering the installation of freestanding, non-drilled fitness equipment so the permission is formalised and cannot be disputed later.

Once installed, a freestanding rig also needs a specific maintenance routine: quarterly visual checks of the base plates, torque checks on all frame connections, verification that the ballast is complete and has not shifted, and a flatness check. Frequently asked questions

Is a freestanding rig as safe as an anchored one?

For about 90 percent of standard functional training uses (pull-ups, muscle-ups, squats, bench work, dips), a properly ballasted freestanding rig with 300-400 kg of ballast offers equivalent security. For repeated weightlifting drops above 150 kg or explosive Olympic pulls, an anchored structure remains safer. The decision follows the facility’s usage profile.

How much extra does a freestanding rig cost compared with a wall-mounted one?

Expect a premium of 30 to 60 percent, driven by the heavier box sections and widened base plates. Set that against the legal advantage (no drilling, compatible with a standard lease) and the mobility benefit: the rig can be dismantled and moved.

How many Olympic plates are needed as ballast?

Between 200 and 400 kg for most configurations: 100-200 kg for a 2-upright rig, 200-400 kg for a 4-upright rig, and 400-600 kg for a 6-upright rig, which translates to 5 to 30 plates of 20 kg. The plates remain available for everyday barbell training.

Can a ballasted rig go on an upper floor?

Not always. Rig, ballast and users together can load the slab at 250-300 kg/m2, while upper-storey slabs are typically rated at 200-400 kg/m2. On any floor above ground level, obtain a structural engineer’s assessment before committing.

Do I still need building consent if nothing is drilled?

Avoiding drilling removes the structural-alteration issue, but operating a gym in a mixed-use building generally still requires consent covering noise, hours and commercial use. Deal with it before signing the lease, whatever rig format you choose.
