Strength equipment for gym operators: how to specify your floor

by Michaël Galy / Friday, 21 June 2024 / Published in Musculation

The equipment makes the gym. If you run a club and you are buying your floor, the equipment has to be built for intensive use and matched to how your members actually train, because every one of them arrives with a different objective: hypertrophy, strength, endurance, weight loss, rehabilitation or simply staying in condition. Light In Fitness specialises in strength equipment for professionals, and this guide sets out how to specify a floor that serves beginners, intermediates and advanced members at the same time.

How to equip a gym properly

Every member is chasing a different goal, so versatility is what you buy first. Beyond the essentials, the adjustable incline bench, the dumbbells, the barbells, the weight plates, the exercise bikes and the treadmills, your room has to offer machines that work every muscle group in the body, with no compromise on safety.

The size of the equipment park is itself an argument. The better equipped the room, the more its added value tells against competing clubs in the same catchment. You also have to keep pace with what is new, whether that is an emerging training trend or a new category of machine, because a floor frozen at its opening day specification ages faster than the building around it.

Which strength machines for a professional gym?

To attract more members and stand out from the competition, a commercial room needs three layers.

Layer What it covers Why it matters
The classics The standard stations that make any gym work Nobody joins a club that lacks them
Duplication Two, three, even four of the most used items: benches, dumbbells from 10 to 40 kg and above, pull up and dip stations Peak hour queues are the main cause of cancelled memberships
Specialist stations Decline benches for the abdominals and lower chest, lumbar benches, Larry Scott benches, the chest press, the shoulder press They complete the classic work and differentiate the club

The third layer is where a room stops looking like every other room in town. Stations such as the chest press and the shoulder press machine are what members name when they explain why they chose you.

Benches: the backbone of the room

Weight benches are the backbone of a gym. These multi function stations carry a mechanism that adjusts the inclination of both the seat and the backrest, so the user can work comfortably according to their programme and their body proportions.

Because a bench serves dozens of different exercises, it is also the item where duplication pays back fastest. Our range of professional weight benches is built for that duty cycle.

Squat racks: the station that needs supervision

Although it is safer than squatting with no equipment at all, the squat rack calls for particular supervision, because members generally load it very heavily. Light In Fitness supplies professional grade squat racks and power racks that let your members work the lower body, and to a lesser extent the upper body, in safety. A rack can also be combined with a bench to develop the whole body, in particular the shoulders, the chest and the triceps.

Frequently asked questions

How many of each station should a club buy?

Duplicate the most used items rather than adding rare ones. Benches, dumbbells and pull up and dip stations are the first candidates, because they are what members queue for at peak hour. The exact count follows from your peak hour attendance and your floor area.

Do specialist machines earn their floor space?

They earn it through differentiation rather than through raw usage. Lumbar benches, Larry Scott benches and dedicated presses are used less often than a bench, but they are the reason an experienced member chooses one club over another.

What dumbbell range does a commercial floor need?

The source range for a professional room runs from 10 to 40 kg and above. The upper end depends on the member profile you actually serve, which is worth establishing before ordering rather than after.

Does a squat rack need staff supervision?

It needs particular attention, because it is the station members load most heavily. That is a matter of sightlines from the desk, spacing around the rack and the safety devices integrated in the rack itself.

Specify your strength floor

The list above is not exhaustive. For your professional sports equipment, work through the full range and you will find every station needed to give your members an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Send us your floor plan, your peak hour attendance and the member profile you are targeting, and our technical team returns a station list, a layout and a detailed quotation. Request a quotation.
