Professional cable crossover buying guide: pulley ratio, column load and layout

by Michaël Galy / Wednesday, 04 March 2026 / Published in Machines guidées, Musculation

A cable crossover is the most versatile single machine on a commercial strength floor: two independent weight columns, adjustable carriages and dozens of exercises from one footprint. It also has two specifications that decide whether it works for your members and that rarely appear in a headline sales sheet: the pulley ratio and the column load. This guide covers the architectures, the six criteria to verify, the layout requirements and realistic budgets.

What a professional cable crossover actually is

A cable crossover, also called a dual adjustable pulley, consists of two vertical steel columns facing each other, each with a height adjustable carriage and an integrated weight stack. The two cables can be worked together or independently, giving constant resistance through the whole range of motion.

In a commercial context, the word professional carries specific requirements: steel tube of at least 80 by 60 by 3 mm, more than 100 kg per column, sheathed cables tested beyond 200,000 cycles, epoxy powder coating that resists sweat induced corrosion, and conformity to EN ISO 20957 class S for intensive multi-user service. Class S is the professional and commercial class under ISO 20957-1:2024; class H is domestic. Some supplier literature still uses the term semi-professional, which has no standing in the standard.

Four cable architectures, often confused

Machine type Architecture Typical load Footprint Indicative budget excluding VAT User profile
Professional cable crossover Two facing columns, adjustable carriages, integrated stacks 2 x 90 to 2 x 160 kg 380 to 430 cm long by 90 to 100 cm deep 3,000 to 12,000 EUR Commercial gym, cross training box, public facility
Compact crossover Single U frame, two fixed high pulleys 2 x 60 to 2 x 90 kg 200 to 280 cm by 120 cm 1,500 to 4,000 EUR Small studio, private high specification gym
Functional trainer Two independent columns, 180 to 360 degree rotation, articulated arms 2 x 70 to 2 x 120 kg 150 to 200 cm by 80 to 110 cm 4,000 to 15,000 EUR Rehabilitation, functional training, interval formats
Multi-station cable tower Four to eight columns grouped, several simultaneous stations 4 to 8 columns of 70 to 100 kg 250 to 400 cm square 8,000 to 20,000 EUR and above Large gym, high frequency circuit training

Real catalogue reference points: a Bodytone FC02 v2 two station crossover lists at 4,950 EUR excluding VAT, an Etenon PC1001B functional trainer at 2,716 EUR, an Etenon PC1001A four station cable tower at 5,996 EUR, and a ten station Bodytone Forza crossover at 14,500 EUR, all excluding VAT.

The pulley ratio: the specification most buyers miss

The pulley ratio tells you what resistance the user actually feels against the load selected on the stack. A 2:1 ratio, the most common arrangement on professional machines, means the user lifts half the displayed weight. A 120 kg column gives a maximum of 60 kg in the hand, which is generally sufficient for around 95 percent of upper body exercises.

Some premium machines offer a 1:1 ratio, which suits maximal strength work but requires a longer cable run and therefore more frequent servicing. Check this figure on the datasheet before ordering, because two machines with identical advertised stacks can deliver very different resistance at the handle.

The six criteria to verify

Criterion Commercial minimum Premium specification Why it matters
Steel section 80 by 60 by 3 mm 100 by 50 by 3 mm up to 120 by 80 by 3 mm Premium sections carry dynamic loads above 400 kg; epoxy powder coating protects against sweat induced corrosion, an under-rated ageing factor
Column load 2 x 90 kg 2 x 120 to 2 x 160 kg, extendable stack An extendable stack lets the machine follow the level of your members without a second purchase
Carriage adjustment 10 to 15 positions Up to 22 positions between 7 cm and 230 cm from the floor Range of adjustment is what converts one machine into dozens of exercises; a quick pin system beats a ratchet in group sessions
Cables and pulleys Sheathed steel, ball bearing pulleys 5 to 7 mm, 19 strand polyurethane sheathed steel, tensile strength up to 950 kg, certified beyond 200,000 cycles Plain bushings add parasitic friction and noise; sealed ball bearings keep the pull smooth through the full range
Attachment set Handles, short and long bars, rope Multi-grip pull-up bar, rotating D handles, rope, ankle strap Carabiners of 25 mm or more follow the common standard and accept third party attachments
Footprint and clearance About 400 by 40 cm base Working envelope of 400 by 250 cm minimum Allow 80 cm lateral clearance each side and a clear height of at least 270 cm, 300 cm where a pull-up bar is fitted

Installation and floor build-up

A professional cable crossover weighs between 200 and 400 kg empty, before the stacks are counted. Three points govern the installation. The substrate has to be flat, because a twisted frame binds the carriages and accelerates cable wear. The floor covering should be a rubber tile of 20 to 25 mm under and around the machine; a 25 mm tile at 1,000 kg per cubic metre lists at 32 EUR per square metre excluding VAT. And the clear height has to be verified under services rather than at the highest point of the room, particularly where the high pulleys sit close to a suspended ceiling.

On layout, position the machine so that its working envelope does not overlap another station or an escape route. Two users working simultaneously on facing columns need the full 400 by 250 cm, and that space cannot be shared with a bench or a rack.

Where the crossover sits in the equipment plan

One two station crossover serves a floor of up to roughly 200 m2. Above that, queueing at peak hours starts to push members towards machines that suit them less well, and a second station or a multi-station tower becomes the better investment. In a supervised studio, the crossover is the machine coaches exploit most heavily. In an unsupervised space such as a hotel or a residential fitness room, a guided multi-station gym is the safer specification, because free cables demand competent positioning that a beginner will not have.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does a cable crossover really need?

The base occupies about 400 by 40 cm, but the working envelope is 400 by 250 cm minimum so two people can train at once. Add 80 cm of lateral clearance each side. Plan on around 12 to 14 m2 including circulation.

Crossover or functional trainer?

The crossover gives longer cable travel and a wider stance, which suits classic chest, back and arm work. The functional trainer occupies less floor area and rotates, which suits rehabilitation and multi-plane conditioning. Venues over about 300 m2 usually justify both; smaller sites should pick according to who coaches on the floor.

How long do the cables last?

Cables on a crossover twist freely, so sheath wear runs faster than on guided machines. Expect 24 to 36 months in intensive service against 36 to 60 months on a guided station, and inspect the sheath for cracking at each preventive visit. Hold a spare set for a machine that is central to your floor.

What column load should I specify?

At least 2 x 90 kg for a commercial floor. Remember the pulley ratio: with a 2:1 machine, a 90 kg column gives 45 kg at the handle, which caps what your stronger members can do on rows and pulldowns. If those movements matter to your membership, specify 2 x 120 kg or an extendable stack.
