For any gym operator, public-sector buyer or facility safety manager, the compliance of fitness equipment is both a legal obligation and a protection against liability claims. The reference framework in Europe is EN ISO 20957 — the current harmonised standard for stationary training equipment, of which EN ISO 20957-1:2024 is the latest general part. You may still see the older designation EN 957 on certificates and tender documents: EN 957 is the legacy European series that has been progressively merged into ISO 20957, and the two names refer to the same body of requirements.

Origins of the standard

n

The original EN 957 series was developed by CEN/TC 136 (“Sports, playground and other recreational facilities and equipment”). The general part, EN 957-1, dates back to 1996 and was substantially updated in 2005. Compliance with the harmonised standard gives equipment placed on the EU market a presumption of safety under European product-safety legislation.

The current reference: EN ISO 20957

n

Since 2013, CEN and ISO have merged their work under the reference ISO 20957 / EN ISO 20957. In 2024 a third edition of the general part was approved: EN ISO 20957-1:2024 is now the version to specify in any procurement document. In day-to-day practice, “EN 957” and “ISO 20957” are often used interchangeably, and a few parts are still referenced under the legacy numbering (notably part 6 for motorised treadmills, EN 957-6+A1). For new purchases and tenders, always cite the most recent edition in force.

Scope

EN ISO 20957 applies to all stationary training equipment used indoors: motorised machines (treadmills, connected bikes) and purely mechanical ones (selectorised machines, plate-loaded stations, free-weight benches). It covers commercial premises — clubs, hotels, public facilities, rehabilitation centres — as well as home use. It does not apply to outdoor fitness equipment (covered by EN 16630) or to equipment for children under 14 outside supervised school use.

Usage classes: S (commercial), H (home) and I (intensive)

Why the classification exists

n

A treadmill running several hours a day in a club with 200 daily visitors faces very different mechanical stress from a cross-trainer in a private living room. The standard therefore defines distinct usage classes:

  • Class H (Home use): equipment for private domestic use by a small number of users, with durability tests calibrated for reduced usage cycles.
  • n

  • Class S (Studio / commercial use): equipment for gyms, clubs, hotels, schools, public facilities and rehabilitation centres, with significantly more demanding durability testing simulating years of intensive use.
  • n

  • Class I (Intensive use, introduced with the 2024 edition of part 1): very high-traffic environments, with criteria stricter still than class S.
  • n

How to identify the class of a machine

The usage class must appear in the sales documentation, the manual and the marking on the machine itself. In any tender procedure, require the certificate of conformity to EN ISO 20957 stating the usage class and the parts covered.

What the conformity tests actually measure

n

Mechanical strength and load tests

n

    n

  • Static load: a fixed load above the declared maximum user load is applied and held; no permanent deformation or failure is allowed.
  • n

  • Dynamic load: repeated variable loads simulate real movement, with far more cycles required for class S.
  • n

  • Anchor points: strength of weight carriages, rails, cables and pulleys.
  • n

  • Structural integrity: welds, bolts and assemblies checked under repeated dynamic stress.
  • n

Stability tests

n

Each machine must resist tipping sideways and forwards, even under an off-centre load. For selectorised weight-stack machines, stability must hold whatever the selected load position.

Durability (fatigue) tests

n

These are the most discriminating tests between classes H and S. The machine undergoes millions of mechanical cycles simulating years of intensive use. No critical part — cables, axles, bearings, pedals, adjustment mechanisms, resistance systems — may show cracking, excessive deformation or abnormal play afterwards.

Functional and ergonomic safety tests

  • Entrapment: no gaps able to trap fingers, hands or limbs (strict dimensional criteria).
  • n

  • Emergency stop (motorised machines): safety lanyard and stop control on treadmills, with a maximum stopping time.
  • n

  • Edges: no accessible sharp edges or abrasive surfaces.
  • n

  • Adjustment systems: locking mechanisms must not release unintentionally under load or vibration.
  • n

  • Display accuracy: tolerances for displayed power, speed and heart-rate readings.
  • n

CE marking and mandatory documentation

n

CE marking indicates conformity with all applicable European directives. For motorised equipment this includes the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), the EMC Directive and RoHS; for purely mechanical machines, conformity with EN ISO 20957 provides a presumption of conformity with EU general product-safety legislation. In practice the manufacturer must draw up an EU Declaration of Conformity, compile a technical file (drawings, test results, risk analyses), affix the CE marking, and keep the file for at least 10 years after the product is placed on the market.

Every professional buyer should systematically request: the EU Declaration of Conformity; the test report issued by an accredited body (TUV, SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas and similar) stating the part of the standard tested and the validated usage class; the user and maintenance manual in the operating language, with inspection frequencies; and the spare-parts list with guaranteed availability periods. Operator obligations: liability, inspection, maintenance

The facility operator is the responsible party in the sense of the standard. Across Europe, national health and safety legislation requires operators of publicly accessible sports facilities — private clubs, hotels, schools, care settings, military and defence facilities — to guarantee user safety, and conformity with EN ISO 20957 is the recognised benchmark. After an accident involving non-compliant or poorly maintained equipment, the operator faces civil and potentially criminal liability, even in unstaffed facilities.

The standard supports a three-level inspection routine:

  • Daily visual inspection: frayed cables, loose bolts, detached upholstery or grips.
  • n

  • Quarterly operational check: function test, emergency stops, lubrication, cable tension.
  • n

  • Annual in-depth inspection: structural check, preventive replacement of wear parts, safety log update.

All checks should be documented in a dated, signed safety log — the document inspectors and insurers ask for first. A structured annual gym maintenance plan makes this straightforward.

Non-compliance exposes the operator to graduated sanctions: formal notices, temporary closure, loss of insurance cover after an incident, administrative fines and, in the most serious cases, prosecution. A class H machine used commercially is non-compliant even if brand new and CE-marked.

What is the difference between EN 957 and EN ISO 20957?
