High Pulley, Low Pulley or Cable Crossover: Which Machine Should You Choose?

If your gym can house only one cable machine, choose an adjustable crossover: it covers 50+ exercises and effectively contains both a high and a low pulley within its adjustable carriages. Dedicated fixed pulleys — lat pulldown and seated row stations — earn their place from around 100–200 m2 upwards, where they absorb queue pressure on the most popular pulls. Here is how to plan the cable zone by floor size, membership and budget.

The three cable configurations: definition and mechanics

Type Mechanical principle Cable position Resistance direction
High pulley (lat pulldown / triceps station) Cable runs from a fixed point above head height; the user pulls downwards Top (180–220 cm) Downwards
Low pulley (seated row / curl station) Cable runs from a fixed point near the floor; the user pulls upwards or towards the body Bottom (15–30 cm) Upwards
Cable crossover (dual adjustable) Two facing columns, each with a carriage adjustable over the full column height; the user works between them in any direction Adjustable (0–220 cm) Any direction

The key point: high and low pulleys are fixed-angle machines — one working angle each. The crossover offers an effectively infinite range of angles through its adjustable carriages, which is why it has become the most requested piece of cable equipment in modern gyms.

Exercise matrix: which pulley for which muscle group

Muscle group High pulley Low pulley Crossover
Back (lats) Lat pulldown, all grips Seated row All pulls plus every intermediate angle
Chest Limited (high-cable pullover) Low-to-high fly (upper chest) Every fly angle plus cable press
Shoulders Face pull, reverse fly Lateral and front raises All angles plus external rotations
Triceps Pushdowns (rope, bar, V-bar) Overhead extensions Every triceps movement
Biceps High-cable curl (pre-stretch) Low-cable curl (constant tension) All curls at unique angles
Abdominals Kneeling cable crunch Low-to-high woodchop Crunch, woodchop and Pallof press
Glutes / hamstrings Not suitable Pull-throughs, kickbacks Pull-throughs, kickbacks, abductions
Traps / rotator cuff Face pull Upright row Face pulls plus rotations at every angle

The tally: a high pulley delivers roughly 12–15 exercises, a low pulley 12–15, and a crossover 50+ — the crossover is literally the sum of the two fixed pulleys plus every angle in between.

Technical and budget comparison

Criterion High pulley Low pulley Crossover
Floor footprint 1.5–2.5 m2 2–3 m2 4–8 m2 plus central working space
Height required 230–250 cm 130–160 cm 230–260 cm
Weight stack 70–120 kg 70–120 kg 2 × 80–100 kg, independent
Exercise count 12–15 12–15 50+
Simultaneous users 1 1 1–2 (one per column)
Cable maintenance Replacement every 36–48 months Replacement every 36–48 months Every 24–36 months — free rotation accelerates wear
Indicative price (professional) 1,800–3,500 EUR excl. VAT 1,800–3,500 EUR excl. VAT 3,500–8,000 EUR excl. VAT

Which configuration for your floor size

Under 100 m2: the crossover first

In a small space the crossover is the best investment per square metre: one 6–8 m2 machine delivers 50+ exercises and replaces three or four fixed stations. A two-station unit such as the Bodytone FC02v2 (2 × 91 kg stacks, rep counter, multigrip pull-up bar) costs 4,950 EUR excluding VAT; no separate high or low pulley is needed at this size.

100–300 m2: crossover plus dedicated pulleys

With 200–400 members the crossover becomes a bottleneck at peak times. Combine it with dedicated stations for the most demanded pulls:

  • 1 × cable crossover: 4,950–7,500 EUR excluding VAT
  • 1 × professional lat pulldown (dedicated high pulley): 1,800–3,200 EUR excluding VAT
  • 1 × professional seated row (dedicated low pulley): 1,800–3,200 EUR excluding VAT
  • Total cable budget: 8,550–13,900 EUR excluding VAT

Over 300 m2: duplicate and specialise

Large clubs (500+ members) should plan for zero queuing at peak hours by duplicating the busiest stations:

  • 2 × cable crossovers: 9,900–15,000 EUR excluding VAT
  • 2 × lat pulldowns: 3,600–6,400 EUR excluding VAT
  • 2 × seated rows: 3,600–6,400 EUR excluding VAT
  • 1 × 10-station cable crossover for group or functional zones: 14,500 EUR excluding VAT
  • Total cable budget: 31,600–42,300 EUR excluding VAT

Budgets are project estimates excluding VAT; the two unit prices quoted (4,950 EUR and 14,500 EUR) are current catalogue prices excluding VAT.

Dedicated stations vs the crossover: not rivals

  • The lat pulldown is a high pulley with a seat and thigh pads: better stabilisation for heavy vertical pulling than the crossover, because the knees are locked and cheating is impossible.
  • The seated row is a low pulley with a footplate and chest support that isolates the back better than a freestanding cable row.
  • Multi-station units often integrate lat pulldown, low row and chest press on one frame — compact, with the trade-off of shared cables and stacks.

Our recommendation: dedicated, guided stations for heavy basics; the crossover for variable angles, isolation, rehabilitation and finishing work. They are complementary. For the underlying mechanics — pulley ratios, stack sizing, cable specifications — see the cable machine architecture guide; detailed selection criteria for the crossover itself (upright sections, carriage positions, locking systems, accessories) are in the cable crossover buying guide, and the fixed low pulley in the seated row machine buying guide.

The classic mistake: replacing a crossover with two fixed pulleys

Buying a high pulley plus a low pulley “to cover the same exercises for less” is a false economy: for roughly 1,000–1,500 EUR more than the fixed pair, the crossover doubles the exercise count (50+ versus 25–30), adds 20–30 adjustable positions instead of two fixed angles, and enables bilateral work — flys, presses, simultaneous unilateral pulls — that a single cable cannot. The only scenario favouring fixed pulleys is a club over 200 m2 that already owns a crossover and wants dedicated stations to cut queues.

Frequently asked questions

What does the pulley ratio mean in practice?

A 1:2 ratio (the crossover standard) halves the felt resistance: an 80 kg stack delivers 40 kg at the handle, with twice the cable travel — ideal for fast, long-range movements. Fixed lat pulldowns and rows typically run 1:1, which is why their stacks feel heavier. Check the ratio before comparing stack weights between machines.

How many members can one crossover serve?

Comfortably around 200–300 members. Beyond that, peak-hour queues appear on pulldown and row patterns first — the signal to add dedicated stations rather than a second crossover.

Why do crossover cables wear faster than fixed-pulley cables?

Free rotation: the adjustable carriage lets the cable twist and exit at every angle, flexing it far more than a guided path does. Plan replacement every 24–36 months in commercial use and keep a spare set on site.

Which accessories should come with a crossover?

At minimum: triceps rope, straight bar, D-handles and ankle strap. Bought separately the set costs 150–300 EUR, so check what the supplier includes.
