The seated row is the most used and least discussed machine in a strength area. It trains the back without loading the lumbar spine, it is intuitive enough for unsupervised members, and on chest supported versions it is the safest back exercise available in a gym. This guide sets out the five machine types, what separates them in practice, how a seated row compares with a lat pulldown when the budget only stretches to one, and the maintenance points that decide how long the machine stays in service.
Short answer. For a commercial gym with paying members, buy the lat pulldown first because it has the higher utilisation rate, then add a seated row. For a workplace gym, a residential building or a health oriented facility, buy the chest supported seated row first, because the population is sedentary and scapular retraction is what they need. If you already have a multi station gym, both movements are already available on the high and low pulleys, and the next dedicated purchase should be a chest supported or converging row, which the multi station cannot reproduce.

Electromyography studies consistently show higher latissimus and mid trapezius activation on chest supported and converging rows than on a standard seated row, because the pad prevents the user from compensating with trunk swing. The reported percentages vary widely between protocols, so treat the ordering as reliable and the absolute figures as indicative. The practical consequence is stable: the same load produces more back work on a supported machine, and less lumbar involvement.

Note on budgeting: older guidance placing a professional seated row in a 2,000 to 4,000 EUR bracket no longer matches catalogue pricing at the top of the range, where a Bodytone Forza machine sits close to 4,900 EUR excluding VAT. Footprint and price are close enough between the two movements that neither space nor budget is a reason to prefer one over the other. The decision belongs to your population.
Grip changes what the machine trains
Changing the handle on a seated row is not a comfort adjustment, it changes which muscles do the work. A wide overhand grip drives the elbows away from the body and shifts emphasis towards the mid trapezius, rhomboids and posterior deltoid. A neutral close grip keeps the elbows tight and loads the latissimus through a longer range. An underhand grip increases biceps involvement and shortens the effective back range. Specify at least three handles with the machine, and keep them on a rack at the station rather than in a store cupboard, because handles that are not visible do not get used.
Wear points and maintenance
A seated row is mechanically simple, and its failures are predictable. Cables and terminations are the first item: inspect for broken strands at the swage and at the pulley entry every quarter, and replace on the first sign rather than at failure. Pulley bearings run dry over time and start to squeal, which members interpret as a broken machine. Upholstery on the chest pad and seat splits from sweat and cleaning products; specify replaceable pads and order a spare set with the machine. On selectorised units, check the selector pin and the guide rods annually, and confirm that the stack top plate has not been struck by a dropped stack.
Underneath, a 20 mm dense rubber tile is the correct build up. Machine feet concentrate load on a small area, so density matters more than thickness here: a low density tile will indent under the frame and open the joints.
Frequently asked questions
Is a chest supported row worth the extra cost?
In a facility serving sedentary or older users, yes, because it removes the lumbar compensation entirely and it is the version a physiotherapist would specify. In a strength focused commercial gym with experienced members, the selectorised seated row is the more flexible purchase.
What use class should a strength machine carry?
Class S under ISO 20957-1:2024 for professional and commercial use, or class I for professional inclusive use. Those, with class H for home use and accuracy classes A, B and C, are the only classes the standard defines. Semi professional is a sales term and has no meaning in a specification.
How heavy should the weight stack be?
A stack that caps your advancing members within eighteen months is a stack you will pay to upgrade. On pulling movements, plan for at least 90 to 110 kg in a general commercial gym; the machines carrying a 107 kg stack as standard are specified for exactly this reason.
Can a multi station gym replace a dedicated seated row?
It covers the movement, on the low pulley, but not the chest supported or converging variants, and it creates a single point of congestion because one user occupies every station on the frame. In a site above roughly forty concurrent users, a dedicated machine pays for itself in queue reduction alone.
